Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudySuperiority of opioid free anesthesia with regional block over opioid anesthesia with regional block in the quality of recovery after retroperitoneiscopic renal surgery: a randomized controlled trial.
Opioids are the main analgesic drugs used in the perioperative period, but they often have various adverse effects. Recent studies have shown that quadratus lumborum block (QLB) has an opioid sparing effect. The aim of this study was to further evaluate the effect of opioid-free anesthesia (OFA) combined with regional block on the quality of recovery in patients undergoing retroperitoneoscopic renal surgery. ⋯ OFA with regional block is superior to opioid anesthesia with regional block in the quality of recovery after retroperitoneiscopic renal surgery.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyCuffed versus uncuffed endotracheal tubes in neonates undergoing noncardiac surgeries: A randomized controlled trial.
The efficacy and safety of cuffed endotracheal tubes (ETTs) in neonates are still unclear, this study aimed to assess the efficacy of cuffed versus uncuffed ETTs in neonate undergoing noncardiac surgeries. ⋯ In full term neonates undergoing noncardiac surgeries, the use of cuffed ETT was associated with less need to tracheal tube exchange and less incidence of postoperative croup, without increasing the postoperative respiratory complications compared to uncuffed ETT.

Family supplemented patient monitoring after surgery (SMARTER): a pilot stepped-wedge cluster-randomised trial.
Mortality after surgery in Africa is twice that in high-income countries. Most deaths occur on wards after patients develop postoperative complications. Family members might contribute meaningfully and safely to early recognition of deteriorating patients. ⋯ NCT04341558.

Diaphragm-sparing efficacy of subparaneural upper trunk block for arthroscopic shoulder surgery: A randomised controlled trial.
Inter-scalene block (ISB) is associated with an inevitable risk of hemi-diaphragmatic paresis (HDP). To reduce the risk of HDP, an upper trunk block (UTB) has been proposed at the brachial plexus division level. ⋯ UTB was associated with a lower incidence of HDP compared with ISB while providing excellent analgesia in arthroscopic shoulder surgery.

The effect of low-dose ketamine on electroencephalographic spectrum during gynecology surgery under desflurane anesthesia.
The perioperative administration of low-dose ketamine has shown potential in postoperative pain management, opioid sparing, and enhancing pain control. This study aimed to investigate the impact of low-dose ketamine on processed electroencephalography (EEG) signals during anesthesia. ⋯ Low-dose ketamine administration during desflurane anesthesia led to notable changes in EEG patterns and PSi values. These findings provide valuable insights into the impact of ketamine on brain activity, and offer essential information for clinical anesthesiologists.
