ED utilization trends in sports-related traumatic brain injury.
Emergency department (ED) visits for sports-related traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) have risen. This study evaluated how the number and severity of admissions have changed as ED visits for sports-related TBIs have increased. ⋯ The percentage of children being admitted from the ED with sports-related TBI has not changed over the past 10 years. The severity of admitted sports-related TBI is decreasing. Additional research is needed to correlate these trends with other TBI mechanisms.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffect of progesterone administration on prognosis of patients with diffuse axonal injury due to severe head trauma.
Severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) has a major role in mortality rate among the other types of trauma. The aim of this clinical study was to assess the effect of progesterone on the improvement of neurologic outcome in patients with acute severe TBI. ⋯ The use of progesterone may significantly improve neurologic outcome of patients suffering severe TBI up to 3 months after injury, especially those with 5≤GCS≤8, providing a potential benefit to the treatment of acute severe TBI patients. Considering this drug had no significant side effects, so progesterone could be used in patients with severe TBI as a neuro-protective drug.

Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell transplantation significantly improves neurological function in patients with sequelae of traumatic brain injury.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of transplantation with umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells in patients with sequelae of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The study hypothesis was that umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell transplantation could safely and effectively improve neurological function in patients with sequelae of traumatic brain injury. Forty patients with sequelae of TBI were randomly assigned to the stem cell treatment group or the control group. ⋯ All in all, the study results confirmed that the umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell transplantation improved the neurological function and self-care in patients with TBI sequels. Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell transplantation may be a potential treatment for patients with sequelae of TBI. Further research, including a multicenter and large sample size prospective randomized clinical trial, will be required to define definitively the role of umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell transplantation on sequelae of TBI.

Prescription headache medication in OEF/OIF veterans: results from the Women Veterans Cohort Study.
To examine differences in male and female veterans of Operations Enduring Freedom/Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) period of service in taking prescription headache medication, and associations between taking prescription headache medication and mental health status, psychiatric symptoms, and rates of traumatic events. ⋯ Among OEF/OIF veterans, the prevalence of clinically relevant headache is high, particularly among women veterans. Taking prescription headache medication is associated with poor mental health status, higher rates of psychiatric symptoms, and higher rates of traumatic events; however, these variables did not appear to meaningfully account for gender differences in prevalence of taking prescription headache medication. Future research should endeavor to identify factors that might account for the observed differences.
