Multicenter Study Observational StudyTemporal Trends in Healthcare Costs and Outcome Following ICU Admission After Traumatic Brain Injury.
To assess temporal trends in 1-year healthcare costs and outcome of intensive care for traumatic brain injury in Finland. ⋯ During the last decade, healthcare costs of ICU-admitted traumatic brain injury patients have remained largely the same in Finland. No change in mortality was noted, but the risk for permanent disability decreased significantly. Thus, our results suggest that cost-effectiveness of traumatic brain injury care has improved during the past decade in Finland.

Nurses' concerns about caring for patients with acute and chronic traumatic brain injury.
As a first step in developing traumatic brain injury-specific nursing education, the purpose of this study was to investigate nurses' concerns about caring for patients with moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury. ⋯ Findings have implications for education of nurses and development of nursing guidelines for management of patients with traumatic brain injury, including providing direction for nurses on development of care plans for patients in the chronic phase after a moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury.

Multicenter Study Comparative Study Observational StudyOptimal Cerebral Perfusion Pressure in Centers With Different Treatment Protocols.
The three centers in this study have different policies regarding cerebral perfusion pressure targets and use of vasopressors in traumatic brain injury patients. The aim was to determine if the different policies affected the estimation of cerebral perfusion pressure which optimizes the strength of cerebral autoregulation, termed "optimal cerebral perfusion pressure." ⋯ Differences in optimal cerebral perfusion pressure calculation were found between centers due to demographics (age) and treatment (cerebral perfusion pressure targets). These factors should be considered in the design of trials to determine the efficacy of autoregulation-guided treatment.

Erythropoietin to Reduce Mortality in Traumatic Brain Injury: A Post-hoc Dose-effect Analysis.
We aimed to assess whether the dosing regimen of erythropoietin shows a relationship to mortality in critically ill patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). ⋯ This post-hoc, hypothesis-generating analysis found potential reductions in mortality following 1 or 2 weekly doses of 40,000 IU of erythropoietin in intensive care unit patients with moderate or severe TBI, but not with 3 doses. These findings will inform the design of future trials of erythropoietin in critically ill patients with TBI and trauma.

The Outcome of Severe Traumatic Brain Injury in Latin America.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) disproportionately affects lower- and middle-income countries (LMIC). The factors influencing outcomes in LMIC have not been examined as rigorously as in higher-income countries. ⋯ Mortality from severe TBI is high in Latin American LMIC, although the rate of favorable recovery is similar to that of high-income countries. Demographic factors such as race and study site played an outsized role in predicting outcome; further research is required to understand these associations.
