Meta-analysis of associating liver partition with portal vein ligation and portal vein occlusion for two-stage hepatectomy.
Discussion is ongoing regarding whether associating liver partition with portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy (ALPPS) or portal vein occlusion is better in staged hepatectomy. The aim of this study was to compare available strategies using a two-stage approach in extended hepatectomy. ⋯ ALPPS is associated with greater future liver remnant hypertrophy and a higher rate of completion of stage 2, but this may be at the price of greater morbidity and mortality.

Statins for Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease in Adults: Evidence Report and Systematic Review for the US Preventive Services Task Force.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD), the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in the United States, may be potentially preventable with statin therapy. ⋯ In adults at increased CVD risk but without prior CVD events, statin therapy was associated with reduced risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality and CVD events, with greater absolute benefits in patients at greater baseline risk.

Meta-analysis of closure of the fascial defect during laparoscopic incisional and ventral hernia repair.
Laparoscopic incisional and ventral hernia repair (LIVHR) is being used increasingly, with reported outcomes equivalent to those of open hernia repair. Closure of the fascial defect (CFD) is a technique that may reduce seroma formation and bulging after LIVHR. Non-closure of the fascial defect makes the repair of larger defects easier and reduces postoperative pain. The aim of this systematic review was to determine whether CFD affects the rate of adverse outcomes, such as recurrence, pseudo-recurrence, mesh eventration or bulging, and the rate of seroma formation. ⋯ CFD during LIVHR reduces the rate of seroma formation and adverse hernia-site events.

Psychological correlates of acute postsurgical pain: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Due to the frequency of surgeries, acute postsurgical pain (APSP) is a common problem. However, the role of psychological factors in the experience of this kind of pain has not been well established. In this review, we focused on presurgical psychological factors associated with the experience of APSP. ⋯ WHAT DOES THIS REVIEW ADD?: Pain catastrophizing, optimism, expectation of pain, neuroticism, anxiety (state and trait), negative affect and depression were classified as likely associated with acute postsurgical pain, and locus of control was classified as unlikely associated with acute postsurgical pain. Anxiety was the psychological variable most frequently measured before surgery. Pain catastrophizing was most strongly linked with acute postsurgical pain.
