Analysis of Risk Factors Causing New Symptomatic Vertebral Compression Fractures After Percutaneous Vertebroplasty for Painful Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fractures: A 4-year Follow-up.
A retrospective cohort study. ⋯ The most important elements related to reducing NVCF were treating osteoporosis and improving BMD and BMI. More aggressive BMD and BMI correction is more important than the vertebroplasty technique.

Autonomic dysfunction in pediatric patients with acquired brain injury is often encountered and greatly understudied. We sought to identify the incidence of Paroxysmal Sympathetic Hyperactivity (PSH) in critically ill pediatric patients with meningoencephalitis and encephalitis, associated risk factors and influence on outcome. ⋯ PSH was found in a high percentage of our patients with significant variation in risk factors and outcome noted between patients with bacterial and nonbacterial causes of their meningoencephalitis/encephalitis.

Intrawound Vancomycin Powder Decreases Staphylococcal Surgical Site Infections After Posterior Instrumented Spinal Arthrodesis.
A retrospective historical cohort design. ⋯ Intrawound vancomycin powder use has decreased the rate of acute staphylococcal SSIs in our posterior instrumented spine arthrodesis surgeries. Patients who are discharged to skilled nursing or rehabilitation facilities are at an increased risk for developing SSIs despite intrawound vancomycin use.

The mechanism of neuropathic pain (NP) and osteoarthritic (OA) pain, although different, are both defined as chronic pain, and combinations are possible. In this study, the awareness of both types of chronic pain was investigated among patients and doctors. This prospective study was planned and coordinated by the orthopedic and internal medicine clinics and included 100 patients with a diagnosis of knee OA evaluated with the DN4 questionnaire. ⋯ It was observed that in these two knee OA patient groups, NP had a statistically significant enhancing effect on the WOMAC pain score and the VAS (p < 0.001). As underlying pathophysiological mechanism of pain caused by OA is complex, and OA is considered to have a component of NP, it has been proven to be useful to use drugs apart from conventional treatments for NP. We believe that, as a source of pain that is not relieved after arthroplasty, awareness level of NP among orthopedists should be increased and multidisciplinary studies are required on this topic.
