Firearm Injury Risk Prediction Among Children Transported by 9-1-1 Emergency Medical Services: A Machine Learning Analysis.
Among children transported by ambulance across the United States, we used machine learning models to develop a risk prediction tool for firearm injury using basic demographic information and home ZIP code matched to publicly available data sources. ⋯ Among pediatric patients transported by ambulance, basic demographic information and neighborhood measures can identify children and adolescents at elevated risk of firearm injuries, which may guide focused injury prevention resources and interventions.

Kidney Outcomes in Children Receiving Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation: A Single-Center Acute Cohort From 2009 to 2019, Followed to 2021.
Long-term kidney outcomes after extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) are little quantified and understood. We aimed to describe the frequency of kidney dysfunction screening during follow-up and the prevalence of long-term kidney disease. ⋯ This 2009-2019 pediatric ECMO cohort of survivors, followed for a median of 5 years, shows the subsequent high burden of kidney disease. We found that monitoring and following kidney function was not complete in this population, which is a concern since the rate of later AKI events and CKD is significant. Further study is needed to mitigate this post-ECMO vulnerability.

Typhoid and paratyphoid fever, collectively known as enteric fever, are systemic infections caused by Salmonella enterica and are highly prevalent in children. We aimed to describe the global burden, trends and inequalities of enteric fever among children under 15 years from 1990 to 2019 based on data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019 (GBD 2019). ⋯ The global disease burden of enteric fever and the magnitude of inequalities across countries have declined since 1990, but low SDI countries remain a region of concern. Travellers from Oceania and Western Europe to endemic regions should be particularly aware of the risk of enteric fever.
