Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialIntraperitoneal normal saline and bupivacaine infusion for reduction of postoperative pain after laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
After laparoscopic cholecystectomy, CO2 remains within the peritoneal cavity, commonly causing pain. This prospective randomized study was performed to determine the efficacy of intraperitoneal normal saline and bupivacaine infusion on postoperative pain after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Three hundred patients were randomly assigned to one of six groups of 50 patients each. ⋯ Postoperative pain was reduced significantly in the patients of the treatment groups vs. the controls. Between treatment groups, patients in groups B, E, and F had the best results, while those in groups C and D had significantly greater pain than those in groups B, E, and F. It is concluded that postoperative pain after laparoscopic cholecystectomy can be significantly reduced by intraperitoneal normal saline infusion subdiaphragmatically and after its postdeflation suction, bupivacaine infusion in the same area, or without bupivacaine in case a subhepatic drainage has been needed.

Few studies have focused on careful assessment of postmastectomy pain (PMP); a chronic neuropathic pain syndrome that can affect women postlumpectomy or postmastectomy for breast cancer (BC). Study aims were to determine the prevalence of PMP in an outpatient sample of breast cancer survivors (BCS), describe subjective and objective characteristics of PMP, and examine the relationship between PMP and quality of life. ⋯ Results show PMP is a distinct, chronic, pain syndrome affecting 27% of BCS. Findings support the need for clinical trials evaluating the effectiveness of nonpharmacological or cognitive behavioral therapies in alleviating mild to moderate PMP.

Pain after laser surgery is one of the most commonly experienced patient problems. It is a pervasive part of laser treatment and a problem with which nurses and physicians are expected to deal. ⋯ Prior to undergoing the prescribed treatment, patients must have a realistic understanding of the laser procedure, including the expected sensations associated with the surgery. Education will not only correct misconceptions and reduce anxiety, but will also allow patients to play an active role in their surgery and to optimize fully from pain-reducing techniques and strategies.
