Mounting evidence points to the heterogeneity of osteoarthritis (OA) pain, increasing the need for more comprehensive assessment of the efficacy of standard interventions. This study investigated whether 14 days of the selective Cox-2 inhibitor etoricoxib (60 mg/day) would modify self-report of pain intensity and quality, and physical measures of hyperalgesia and function in individuals with knee OA. ⋯ Just 14 days of etoricoxib significantly improves pain intensity and quality, function and local and widespread hyperalgesia, measured by both self-report and physical tests.

Auricular acupuncture for spinal cord injury related neuropathic pain: a pilot controlled clinical trial.
To obtain preliminary data on the effects of an auricular acupuncture protocol, Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA), on self-reported pain intensity in persons with chronic Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) and neuropathic pain. ⋯ This pilot study has provided proof of concept that BFA has clinically meaningful effect on the modulation of SCI neuropathic pain.

Cyclization of Motor Cortex Stimulation for Neuropathic Pain: A Prospective, Randomized, Blinded Trial.
Programming guidelines for motor cortex stimulation (MCS) in neuropathic pain requires further investigation. After optimizing voltage as a percentage of motor threshold, we evaluated the effect of cyclizing time of stimulation on pain relief for chronic neuropathic pain. ⋯ In this small cohort, cyclization of MCS settings revealed two distinct subgroups: responders and nonresponders. Responders tolerated stimulation in all settings and 50% stimulation (15 min ON/15 min off) was their subjectively preferred setting. Cyclization in responders will prolong battery life and delay the need for INS replacement and may offer improved pain relief. Building from our previous work, we recommend clinicians consider following the Vancouver MCS programming algorithm presented in this manuscript.

Aromatherapy Massage for Neuropathic Pain and Quality of Life in Diabetic Patients.
This study aimed to examine the effects of aromatherapy massage on neuropathic pain severity and quality of life (QoL) in patients suffering from painful diabetic neuropathy. ⋯ Aromatherapy massage is a well-tolerated, feasible, and safe nonpharmacological method that can be readily integrated into clinical settings by nursing staff. The essential oils rosemary, geranium, lavender, eucalyptus, and chamomile can be safely used by nurses in the clinical setting, if applicable. However, training and experience of nurses in aromatherapy massage is critical to achieving positive results.

Efficacy of the topical 5% lidocaine medicated plaster in the treatment of chronic post-thoracotomy neuropathic pain.
To assess the efficacy of the topical 5% lidocaine medicated plaster (Versatis®, Grünenthal GmbH, Aachen, Germany) in patients with post-thoracotomy neuropathic pain. ⋯ The study included neurophysiological findings and confirmed the efficacy of the topical 5% lidocaine medicated plaster in patients with chronic post-thoracotomy neuropathic pain.
