ReviewMonitoring of analgesia level during general anesthesia in children.
Monitoring of intraoperative nociception has made substantial progress in adult anesthesia during the last 10 years. Several monitors have been validated and their use has been associated with intraoperative or postoperative benefits in the adult population. In pediatric anesthesia, less data are available. However, several recent publications have assessed the performance of nociception monitors in children, and investigated their potential benefits in this context. This review will describe the main validated intraoperative nociception monitors, summarize adult findings and describe the available pediatric data. ⋯ To date, four monitors may provide a relevant assessment of intraoperative nociception in children. However, the potential clinical benefits associated with their use to guide analgesia remain to be demonstrated.

ReviewPower spectrum and spectrogram of EEG analysis during general anesthesia: Python-based computer programming analysis.
The commonly used principle for measuring the depth of anesthesia involves changes in the frequency components of the electroencephalogram (EEG) under general anesthesia. Therefore, it is essential to construct an effective spectrum and spectrogram to analyze the relationship between the depth of anesthesia and the EEG frequency during general anesthesia. This paper reviews the computer programming techniques for analyzing the spectrum and spectrogram derived from a single-channel EEG recorded during general anesthesia. ⋯ Finally, the multitaper method, which can suppress artifacts caused by the edges of the analysis segments, suppress noise, and probabilistically infer values that are close to the real power spectral density, is explained using practical examples of the analysis. All analyses were performed and all graphs plotted using Python under Jupyter Notebook. The analyses demonstrated the effectiveness of Python-based programming under the integrated development environment Jupyter Notebook for constructing an effective spectrum and spectrogram for analyzing the relationship between the depth of anesthesia and EEG frequency analysis in general anesthesia.

ReviewApplication of Nonhuman Primate Models in the Studies of Pediatric Anesthesia Neurotoxicity.
Numerous animal models have been used to study developmental neurotoxicity associated with short-term or prolonged exposure of common general anesthetics at clinically relevant concentrations. Pediatric anesthesia models using the nonhuman primate (NHP) may more accurately reflect the human condition because of their phylogenetic similarity to humans with regard to reproduction, development, neuroanatomy, and cognition. ⋯ In this review, we discuss how neonatal NHP animals have been used for modeling pediatric anesthetic exposure; how NHPs have addressed key data gaps and application of the NHP model for the studies of general anesthetic-induced developmental neurotoxicity. The appropriate application and evaluation of the NHP model in the study of general anesthetic-induced developmental neurotoxicity have played a key role in enhancing the understanding and awareness of the potential neurotoxicity associated with pediatric general anesthetics.

Meta AnalysisThe effects of intraoperative magnesium sulfate administration on emergence agitation and delirium in pediatric patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
The role of intraoperative magnesium for the prevention of emergence agitation or delirium is unclear as there have been conflicting results reported by several randomized controlled trials. ⋯ The administration of magnesium sulfate reduced the incidence and severity of emergence agitation or emergence delirium in pediatric patients after the use of general anesthesia during surgery.

Efficacy and safety of rhomboid intercostal block for analgesia in breast surgery and thoracoscopic surgery: a meta-analysis.
Rhomboid intercostal block (RIB) is a new regional anesthesia technique that provides postoperative analgesia for breast surgery and thoracoscopic surgery. The published papers are not yet fully integrated and do not adequately address the impact and safety of the RIB on postoperative pain. ⋯ This review shows that RIB was more effective in controlling acute pain after breast surgery and thoracoscopic surgery than general analgesia. And it is a trend that RIB may be a kind of effective and safe nerve bock technology and it requires further studies.
