Review Meta AnalysisWITHDRAWN: Target-controlled infusion versus manually-controlled infusion of propofol for general anaesthesia or sedation in adults.
July 2016 Owing to the age, retraction of studies (Lehmann 2001; Lehmann 2002; Triem 2006), and possible errors in the conversion of dose for the purpose of analysis the decision has been reached to withdraw the review from the CDSR pending update and amendment of the review. The editorial group responsible for this previously published document have withdrawn it from publication.

The clinical benefits of intraoperative low tidal volume (LTV) mechanical ventilation with concomittent positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) and intermittent recruitment maneuvers-termed "protective lung ventilation" (PLV)-have not been investigated systematically in otherwise healthy patients undergoing general anesthesia. ⋯ Intraoperative LTV ventilation in conjunction with PEEP and intermittent recruitment maneuvers is associated with significantly improved clinical pulmonary outcomes and reduction in length of hospital stay in otherwise healthy patients undergoing general surgery. Providers should consider application of all the 3 elements for a comprehensive protective ventilation strategy.

Meta AnalysisThe Effect of Preoperative Gabapentin on Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting: A Meta-Analysis.
Preoperative gabapentin has been shown to improve postoperative pain and limit reliance on opioid analgesia. On the basis of an alternative mechanism, our group investigated the ability of preoperative gabapentin to prevent postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). ⋯ Preoperative gabapentin is associated with a significant reduction in PONV among studies designed to investigate this end point. Preoperative gabapentin should be considered not only as part of a multimodal approach to postoperative analgesia, but also for prevention of PONV.

Sore throat, cough, and hoarseness are the common and severe complications after general anesthesia with tracheal intubation. The efficacy of prophylactic administration of corticosteroids in reducing the incidence of postoperative complications is controversial. Thus, we conducted a meta-analysis to assess the effects of corticosteroids in the prevention of postoperative complications. ⋯ Evidence from this meta-analysis of 18 RCTs indicated that prophylactic administration of corticosteroids is not only effective in reducing the incidence and severity of postoperative sore throat and hoarseness, but also the incidence of laryngeal edema and reintubation.
