Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
A randomized controlled trial of postoperative intravenous acetaminophen plus thoracic epidural analgesia vs. thoracic epidural analgesia alone after gastrectomy for gastric cancer.
Acetaminophen is used in multimodal therapy for postoperative pain management. However, the additional effects of acetaminophen in combination with thoracic epidural analgesia (TEA) are not well understood. This prospective, multicenter randomized study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of routine intravenous (i.v.) acetaminophen in combination with TEA for the management of postoperative pain in gastric cancer surgery. ⋯ In gastric cancer surgery patients, routine i.v. acetaminophen in combination with TEA provides superior postoperative pain management compared with TEA alone.

Effects of Electroacupuncture on Opioid Consumption in Patients with Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain: A Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial.
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of electroacupuncture in reducing opioid consumption in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain. ⋯ It is safe to reduce opioid medication use in patients with chronic pain. Due to the small sample size, we could not confirm if electroacupuncture offers extra benefit in addition to education. This nondrug therapy could be a promising adjunct to facilitate opioid tapering in patients who are willing to reduce opioids.

Multicenter StudyWide Variation in Opioid Prescribing After Urological Surgery in Tertiary Care Centers.
To describe postoperative opioid prescribing practices in a large cohort of patients undergoing urological surgery. ⋯ The United States is facing an opioid epidemic, and physicians must take action. In this study, we found considerable variation in opioid prescribing patterns within and across surgical procedures. These data provide support for the development of standardized opioid prescribing guidelines for postoperative analgesia.

Standardization of Outpatient Procedure (STOP) Narcotics: A Prospective Non-Inferiority Study to Reduce Opioid Use in Outpatient General Surgical Procedures.
There has been a dramatic rise in opioid abuse, and diversion of excess, unused prescriptions is a major contributor. We assess the impact of implementing a new standardized pain care bundle to reduce postoperative opioids in outpatient general surgical procedures. ⋯ For outpatient open hernia repair and cholecystectomy, a standardized pain care bundle decreased opioid prescribing significantly and frequently eliminated opioid use, and adequately treating postoperative pain and improving patient satisfaction.
