Impact of analgesic modality on stress response following laparoscopic colorectal surgery: a post-hoc analysis of a randomised controlled trial.
Epidural analgesia is perceived to modulate the stress response after open surgery. This study aimed to explore the feasibility and impact of measuring the stress response attenuation by post-operative analgesic modalities following laparoscopic colorectal surgery within an enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol. ⋯ There is a significant transient attenuating effect of TEA on stress response following laparoscopic colorectal surgery and within ERAS as expressed by serum epinephrine and insulin levels. Continuous wound infusion with local anaesthetic, however, attenuates cytokine response as expressed by interleukin-6.

Can presence of a dog reduce pain and distress in children during venipuncture?
The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of animal-assisted intervention as distraction for reducing children's pain and distress before, during, and after standard blood collection procedure. Fifty children (ages 4-11 years) undergoing venipuncture were randomly assigned to the experimental group (EG; n = 25) or to the control group (CG; n = 25). The blood collection procedure was carried on the children in the EG arm in the presence of a dog, whereas no dog was present when venipuncture was conducted on children in CG. ⋯ Furthermore, cortisol levels were lower in the EG group compared with the CG group. There were no significant differences in pain ratings and in the level of parental anxiety. It appears that the presence of dogs during blood draw procedures reduces distress in children.

Randomized Controlled TrialTopical anaesthetic patches for postoperative wound pain in laparoscopic gynaecological surgery: a prospective, blinded and randomised trial.
Aim of this prospective study was to investigate the effectiveness of eutectic mixture of local anaesthetic (EMLA) patches on every abdominal incision for pain relief after gynaecologic laparoscopic surgery. ⋯ Despite of a significant reduction of time for mobilisation transdermal anaesthetic patches after gynaecologic laparoscopic surgery did not lead to decreased postoperative pain scores.

Prophylactic ibuprofen does not improve pain with IUD insertion: a randomized trial.
To evaluate if ibuprofen 800mg reduces pain with intrauterine device (IUD) insertion among U.S. women. ⋯ Administration of ibuprofen 800mg prior to IUD insertion does not reduce pain associated with the procedure for U.S. women. Overall, nulliparous women report more pain with IUD insertion than multiparous women.

Pulsed radiofrequency for chronic inguinal neuralgia.
Chronic inguinal neuralgia has been reported after inguinal herniorrhaphy, caesarean section, appendectomy, and trauma to the lower quadrant of the abdomen or inguinal region. ⋯ For intractable chronic inguinal pain, PRF for the dorsal root ganglion represents a promising treatment modality.
