Ultrasound-Guided Cervical Nerve Root Block for the Treatment of Acute Cervical Herpes Zoster: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Study.
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of ultrasound-guided cervical nerve root block (CRB) on acute pain and its preventive effects on post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) in patients with cervical herpes zoster (HZ). ⋯ Ultrasound-guided CRB represented an early intervention and preventive strategy to reduce the BOI due to acute HZ in the cervical dermatome region, and might be feasible to reduce the incidence of PHN.

Clinical TrialIntraoperative Hyperoxia Does Not Reduce Postoperative Pain: Subanalysis of an Alternating Cohort Trial.
Postoperative pain is common and promotes opioid use. Surgical wounds are hypoxic because normal perfusion is impaired. Local wound ischemia and acidosis promote incisional pain. Some evidence suggests that improving oxygen supply to surgical wounds might reduce pain. We therefore tested the hypothesis that supplemental (80% inspired) intraoperative oxygen reduces postoperative pain and opioid consumption. ⋯ Supplemental intraoperative oxygen does not reduce acute postoperative pain or reduce opioid consumption.

This is a comprehensive, structured review synthesizing and summarizing the current experimental data and knowledge about the mechanisms of action (MOA) underlying spinal cord stimulation with the burst waveform (as defined by De Ridder) in chronic pain treatment. ⋯ Burst spinal cord stimulation likely provides pain relief via multiple mechanisms at the level of both the spinal cord and the brain. The specific waveforms and temporal patterns of stimulation both play a role in the responses observed. Differential modulation of neurons in the dorsal horn and dorsal column nuclei are the spinal underpinnings of paresthesia-free analgesia. The burst stimulation pattern also produces different patterns of activation within the brain when compared with tonic stimulation. The latter may have implications for not only the somatic components of chronic pain but also the lateral and affective pathway dimensions as well.

Neural Tension Technique Improves Immediate Conditioned Pain Modulation in Patients with Chronic Neck Pain: A Randomized Clinical Trial.
To determine the immediate effect of neural tension technique (NTT) on conditioned pain modulation in patients with chronic neck pain. A secondary objective was to determine the immediate effect of neural tensioner technique on pain intensity and cervical range of movement. ⋯ This study suggests that neural tension technique enhances immediate conditioned pain modulation in patients with chronic neck pain, but not pain intensity or cervical range of movement.

How Theory Can Help Facilitate Implementing Relaxation as a Complementary Pain Management Approach.
Complementary therapies provide cancer survivors and clinicians with options for managing chronic pain. Recent published clinical guidelines and research findings support the use of relaxation therapy for managing chronic pain in cancer survivors. ⋯ Using theory to guide implementation of a new practice can increase the likelihood of successful adoption. This article uses relaxation therapy for cancer survivors to describe how clinicians could use Rogers' Diffusion of Innovation Theory and the related Collaborative Research Utilization Model to implement a complementary therapy and ensure that it becomes standard practice.
