Evaluation of a multisite telehealth group model for persistent pain management for rural/remote participants.
Individuals living in rural/remote areas have recognised barriers to specialist services for persistent pain management. Although there is current evidence to support the use of telehealth to deliver individual pain management support, there is minimal evidence to support the use of pain management programs delivered within a group model, using telehealth. The aim of the present research was to perform a formative evaluation of a persistent pain management program implemented using a multisite telehealth group model, and to examine consumer perceptions. ⋯ Results confirmed that participants received benefit from the pain management program and that they had positive perceptions of receiving the service using a telehealth model. The present findings provide positive data to support using telehealth to deliver specialist persistent pain management for individuals who face accessibility issues in rural and remote communities. The model also demonstrated that positive elements of group treatment can be achieved through telehealth group models.

Case ReportsLumbar erector spinae plane block: Successful control of acute pain after lumbar spine surgery - A clinical report.
We report the successful clinical case of a patient scheduled for lumbar spine surgery in which we performed a bilateral single-shot erector spinae plane block as part of a multimodal analgesic strategy for pain control. Performing the block preoperatively dismissed the need for extra intraoperative opioids other than those for intubation, and enabled the use of paracetamol for analgesia only. ⋯ Postoperatively, the patient had minor opioid consumption and was able to freely move without any motor impairment or pain from early on in the Post Anaesthesia Care Unit. The use of single-shot erector spinae plane block at the lumbar level for lumbar spine surgery analgesia emphasises its wide application and analgesic efficacy.

The Use of the Buzzy, Jet Lidokaine, Bubble-blowing and Aromatherapy for Reducing Pediatric Pain, Stress and Fear Associated with Phlebotomy.
This study aimed to investigate the effects of the Buzzy, Jet lidokaine, bubble-blowing and inhalation aromatherapy with lavender essence on pain, stress and fear in children undergoing phlebotomy. ⋯ It is recommended that the Buzzy and bubble-blowing be used during phlebotomy in children to reduce the severity of their pain.

It is imperative to find the balance between pain control and addressing the opioid epidemic. Opioids, although effective in the acute pain management, have multiple side effects and can lead to dependence, abuse, overdose, or death. Physicians should identify patients who abuse opioids, using their states' prescription drug-monitoring programs and use screening tools to identify patients at increased risk of developing opioid dependence. Multimodal analgesic plans, incorporating regional techniques, and nonopioid medications should be employed to reduce the amount of opioids received by patients.

Meta AnalysisThe Effects of Needling Therapies on Muscle Force Production: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.
Needling has been shown to decrease pain in the short term; however, its effects on muscle force production are unclear. ⋯ Therapy, level 1a. J Orthop Sports Phys Ther 2019;49(3):154-170. Epub 30 Nov 2018. doi:10.2519/jospt.2019.8270.
