Parental Psychological Distress Moderates the Impact of a Video Intervention to Help Parents Manage Young Child Vaccination Pain.
The current study sets out to conduct a post hoc analysis of the moderating effect of parent psychological distress on a pediatric pain management intervention. ⋯ To our knowledge, this is the first study to assess a moderating factor on a child pain management intervention. The video's efficacy was moderated for toddlers' pain regulation, such that parents with high psychological distress did not show as much benefit from the intervention. No other moderations were found in either age group for any other outcome. Main effects for the video impacting soothing behavior of parents of both infants and toddlers were confirmed, and a new finding of video efficacy was seen through the significantly lower worry of toddlers' parents post-needle. Given the nonclinical sample, low levels of psychological distress were found. Efforts to replicate this study in a higher risk sample are necessary.

A Novel Technique of Saddle Rhizotomy Using Thermal Radiofrequency for Intractable Perineal Pain in Pelvic Malignancy: A Pilot Study.
The prevalence of pain in advanced pelvic cancer may reach up to 95%. Control of such pain is often difficult owing to a variety of neuroanatomical and functional peculiarities. Different modalities have been utilized to treat this pain including saddle chemical rhizolysis with the potential for jeopardizing the neural control of the sphincters. ⋯ Perineal cancer pain, chemical rhizotomy, thermal radiofrequency.

Mirror therapy for phantom limb and stump pain: a randomized controlled clinical trial in landmine amputees in Cambodia.
Background and aims The aim of the study was to examine the effect of mirror and tactile therapy on phantom and stump pain in patients with traumatic amputations, with particular reference to amputees in low-income communities. Methods The study was conducted with an open, randomized, semi-crossover case-control design in rural Cambodia. A study sample of 45 landmine victims with trans-tibial amputations was allocated to three treatment arms; mirror therapy, tactile therapy, and combined mirror-and-tactile therapy. ⋯ Conclusions The study documents that a 4-week treatment period with mirror and/or tactile therapy significantly reduces PLP and stump pain after trans-tibial amputations. Implications The article reports for the first time a randomized controlled trial of mirror therapy in a homogenous sample of persons with traumatic amputations. The findings are of special relevance to amputees in low-resource communities.

The Efficacy of Ultrasound-Guided Paravertebral Block in Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy.
Background and objectives: Despite its wide use in thoracic procedures, to date, few studies have assessed the effectiveness of paravertebral block (PVB) in laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) in an adult population. In these studies, PVB was performed bilaterally using nerve stimulator guidance. To the best of our knowledge, the effectiveness of unilateral preoperative and postoperative ultrasound-guided PVB has not been evaluated in patients undergoing elective LC. ⋯ When the VAS scores were compared between the preoperative and postoperative block groups, a significant difference in favor of the preoperative group was observed in terms of the zero minute-, 1st and 2nd h assessments (p < 0.05 for all). Conclusions: Ultrasound-guided PVB is a useful and safe approach for pain management during and after LC. Preoperative block can also reduce the rate of requirement for intraoperative opioid and postoperative analgesia.
