Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a common chronic disorder of knee and the leading cause of pain in the elderly with an overall prevalence of 50% in people over 60 years of age. This disease is an important factor affecting the quality of life of middle-aged and elderly people, and its main symptom is knee joint pain. Due to the pain, the knee joint activity function is limited, bringing great pain to patients, affecting their quality of life, effective prevention, and treatment of KOA is a modern medical problem. ⋯ PROSPERO (registration number ChiCTR1900024712).

The efficacy of ketamine in total knee arthroplasty: a randomized controlled trial protocol.
Appropriate pain management is essential to improve the postoperative recovery after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). There is a paucity of literature on ketamine for TKA procedures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the analgesic efficacy of ketamine in patients undergoing primary TKA. ⋯ The results of this study were expected to provide useful information on the effectiveness and safety of ketamine for immediate postoperative analgesia after TKA surgery.

ReviewMinimally Invasive Therapies for Osteoarthritic Hip Pain: a Comprehensive Review.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a highly prevalent cause of chronic hip pain, affecting 27% of adults aged over 45 years and 42% of adults aged over 75 years. Though OA has traditionally been described as a disorder of "wear-and-tear," recent studies have expanded on this understanding to include a possible inflammatory etiology as well, damage to articular cartilage produces debris in the joint that is phagocytosed by synovial cells which leads to inflammation. ⋯ Patients with OA of the hip frequently have decreased quality of life due to pain and limited mobility though additional comorbidities of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, poor sleep quality, and obesity have been correlated. Initial treatment with conservative medical management can provide effective symptomatic relief. Physical therapy and exercise are important components of a multimodal approach to osteoarthritic hip pain. Patients with persistent pain may benefit from minimally invasive therapeutic approaches prior to consideration of undergoing total hip arthroplasty. The objective of this review is to provide an update of current minimally invasive therapies for the treatment of pain stemming from hip osteoarthritis; these include intra-articular injection of medication, regenerative therapies, and radiofrequency ablation.

Pain is one of the most common and undesired symptoms in cancer patients, affecting patients' physical and psychological well-being. Barriers to effective pain management in cancer patients need to be identified and addressed by clinicians. ⋯ Tailoring culturally appropriate educational programs regarding effective cancer pain management could facilitate pain management among patients with cancer.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyMulticenter Perioperative Outcomes Group Enhanced Observation Study Postoperative Pain Profiles, Analgesic Use, and Transition to Chronic Pain and Excessive and Prolonged Opioid Use Patterns Methodology.
To study the impact of anesthesia opioid-related outcomes and acute and chronic postsurgical pain, we organized a multicenter study that comprehensively combined detailed perioperative data elements from multiple institutions. By combining pre- and postoperative patient-reported outcomes with automatically extracted high-resolution intraoperative data obtained through the Multicenter Perioperative Outcomes Group (MPOG), the authors sought to describe the impact of patient characteristics, preoperative psychological factors, surgical procedure, anesthetic course, postoperative pain management, and postdischarge pain management on postdischarge pain profiles and opioid consumption patterns. ⋯ Therefore, the study serves as a model for future studies using this innovative method. Full results will be reported in future articles; the purpose of this article is to describe the methods of this study.
