We report a retrospective case study of combined treatment of cancer-related pain and chronic low back and lower extremity pain related to postlaminectomy syndrome (PLS) with one spinal cord stimulation (SCS) system. ⋯ SCS provides an effective, alternative treatment for select patients with cancer-related chest wall pain and pain related to PLS who have failed conservative treatment.

Most total knee arthroplasty (TKA) recipients experience pain following the procedure. Patients are provided with medications to manage pain but there is little information regarding their usage of analgesics after hospital discharge. This study investigated analgesic usage in recent TKA recipients. ⋯ Patient modifications to medication regimens are often labeled as patient nonadherence; however, participants in this study considered their actions to be adaptive. This conceptual distinction has practical implications for healthcare providers. These findings emphasize the importance of having TKA patients develop their pain management regimen in conjunction with healthcare providers so that regimens can be tailored to individual needs.

Does attachment insecurity affect the outcomes of a multidisciplinary pain management program? The association between attachment insecurity, pain, disability, distress, and the use of opioids.
Cognitive and behavioural treatments have been shown to be effective for the management of chronic pain. However, not all patients succeed at such a treatment. Attachment insecurity has recently been proposed as an individual vulnerability factor that may have a negative impact on pain, disability, psychological distress, and compliance with treatment, resulting in a poorer outcome. ⋯ However, the level of anxiety and depression for insecurely attached patients did not decline below a clinical level post-treatment. The present study suggests that attachment insecurity plays an important role in the context of chronic pain management. With regards to the management of pain related anxiety, depression, and the use of opioids, the current results suggests that practitioners should keep attachment insecurity in mind.

Clinical Trial[Percutaneous vertebroplasty for pain relief in patients with osteoporotic spine fractures].
Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) is an interventional radiology technique where pathological vertebral bodies are filled with acrylic cement. This method is used to strengthen the vertebral body and reduce pain in certain diseases involving the vertebrae such as osteoporosis. ⋯ PVP appears to be an effective technique in the treatment of symptomatic osteoporotic vertebral fractures with approximately 94% of satisfactory results in the short and medium term period.

Using a national sample of emergency department (ED) visits, we aim to describe use of CBC, computed tomography (CT), and pain medication among ED visits in which appendicitis was diagnosed. We describe use trends over time and identify use differences between adults and children. ⋯ CT use has increased for patients with appendicitis over time, and CBC use remains high. There has been an increase in analgesic administration, but more than half of all patients with appendicitis had not received pain medication over the course of the entire study period. Children received fewer parenteral narcotics than adults and appeared to be preferentially treated with nonparenteral nonnarcotic analgesics.
