Following the needles: an anatomical study to evaluate the postoperative safety and symptoms of patients receiving a transobturator male sling implant.
Implanting a transobturator male sling is a valid option to manage urinary incontinence after prostatectomy. We evaluated the trajectory of Argus T™ needles blindly introduced into the retropubic space to determine the safety and etiology of postoperative symptoms that can arise from this implant. ⋯ The needle sling implant preserves the obturator neurovascular bundle and obviates the potential for postoperative pelvic hematoma. The anatomical trajectory of the needles used for this implant account for the groin and perineal pain side effects. Based on similarities between the Argus T and other types of outside-in transobturator male slings the results of the current study could be extrapolated to the latter slings.

Lumbosacral transitional vertebra in the young men population with low back pain: anatomical considerations and degenerations (transitional vertebra types in the young men population with low back pain).
To evaluate the prevalence of subtypes of congenital lumbosacral transition vertebra (LSTV) in young male populations with low back pain (LBP) and their relationship to lumbar disc and facet degeneration. ⋯ In young male patients with LBP, LSTV was found to be high in frequency and mostly occurred to be subtype I. LSTV type I and associated disk and facet degeneration were found to be remarkable in this group. Coronal T2 STIR images are useful in showing lumbosacral region anomalies and variants, and should be included in the routine lumbar MRI protocol.

Localization and regulation of reproductive steroid receptors in the raphe serotonin system of male macaques.
We previously showed that tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (TPH2) and serotonin reuptake transporter (SERT) mRNAs are increased by the androgens, testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in serotonin neurons of male macaques. In addition, we observed that serotonin in axons of a terminal region were markedly decreased by aromatase inhibition and lack of estradiol (E) from metabolism of T. These observations implicated androgen receptors (AR) and estrogen receptors (ER) in the transduction of steroid hormone actions in serotonin neurons. ⋯ Rather, AR-positive nuclei were found in neighboring cells that are likely neurons. However, approximately 40% of dorsal raphe serotonin neurons contained ERα or ERβ⋅ In conclusion, the stimulatory effect of androgens on TPH2 and SERT mRNA expression is mediated indirectly by neighboring neurons contain AR. The stimulatory effect of E, derived from T metabolism, on serotonin transport is partially mediated directly via nuclear ERs.

Increased injury rates after the restructure of Germany's national second league of team handball.
Scientific injury data in men's professional team handball injuries are rare and even less scientific information exists on injury prevention. In 2011, Germany's national second team handball league was restructured by merging the existing two regional leagues into one league. This study evaluates the injury patterns in professional team handball and compares the injury rates between the first and second league before and after the restructure. ⋯ III.

The pathogenesis of low trauma wrist fractures in men is not fully understood. This study found that these men have lower bone mineral density at the forearm itself, as well as the hip and spine, and has shown that forearm bone mineral density is the best predictor of wrist fracture.
