Meta AnalysisAntidepressants Are Effective in Decreasing Neuropathic Pain After SCI: A Meta-Analysis.
To systematically review and assess the effectiveness and safety of antidepressants for neuropathic pain among individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). ⋯ The current meta-analysis demonstrates that antidepressants are effective in reducing neuropathic SCI pain. However, this should be interpreted with caution due to the limited number of studies. Further evaluation of long-term therapeutic options may be required.

Review Meta AnalysisNon-pharmacological interventions for chronic pain in people with spinal cord injury.
Chronic pain is frequent in persons living with spinal cord injury (SCI). Conventionally, the pain is treated pharmacologically, yet long-term pain medication is often refractory and associated with side effects. Non-pharmacological interventions are frequently advocated, although the benefit and harm profiles of these treatments are not well established, in part because of methodological weaknesses of available studies. ⋯ Evidence is insufficient to suggest that non-pharmacological treatments are effective in reducing chronic pain in people living with SCI. The benefits and harms of commonly used non-pharmacological pain treatments should be investigated in randomised controlled trials with adequate sample size and study methodology.

Review Meta AnalysisGabapentinoids are effective in decreasing neuropathic pain and other secondary outcomes after spinal cord injury: a meta-analysis.
To examine the effectiveness of gabapentin and pregabalin in diminishing neuropathic pain and other secondary conditions in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). ⋯ Gabapentin and pregabalin appear useful for treating pain and other secondary conditions after SCI. Effectiveness comparative to other analgesics has not been studied. Patients need to be monitored closely for side effects.

Antidepressants are widely used to treat chronic neuropathic pain (pain due to nerve damage), usually in doses below those at which they exert antidepressant effects. An earlier review that included all antidepressants for neuropathic pain is being replaced by new reviews of individual drugs examining individual neuropathic pain conditions.Desipramine is a tricyclic antidepressant that is occasionally used for treating neuropathic pain. ⋯ This review found little evidence to support the use of desipramine to treat neuropathic pain. There was very low quality evidence of benefit and harm, but this came from studies that were methodologically flawed and potentially subject to major bias. Effective medicines with much greater supportive evidence are available. There may be a role for desipramine in patients who have not obtained pain relief from other treatments.

Efficacy and safety of gabapentin 1800 mg treatment for post-herpetic neuralgia: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
Gabapentin has been used for the management of post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). However, inconsistent results have been reported. This meta-analysis was performed to assess the efficacy and safety of gabapentin 1800 mg/day in PHN patients by conducting a meta-analysis. ⋯ Treatment with gabapentin 1800 mg/day yielded a significant reduction in PHN up to 14 weeks. Gabapentin 1800 mg appeared safe in treating PHN for up to 24 weeks.
