Randomized Controlled TrialRandomized controlled trial to evaluate the rate of successful neonatal endotracheal intubation performed with a stylet versus without a stylet.
Neonates in intensive care units often require endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation. During this intubation procedure, a stylet is frequently used along with an endotracheal tube. Despite the widespread use of a stylet, it is still not known whether its use increases the intubation success rate. This study examined the association between stylet use and the intubation success rate in surgical neonates. ⋯ Endotracheal intubation using a stylet did not significantly improve the success rate of the procedure, however, intubation time significantly varied between groups and in different conditions. The rigidity and curvature provided by the stylet may facilitate the process of intubation when smaller caliber endotracheal tubes are used.

Video Laryngoscopy vs Direct Laryngoscopy for Endotracheal Intubation in the Operating Room: A Cluster Randomized Clinical Trial.
Endotracheal tubes are typically inserted in the operating room using direct laryngoscopy. Video laryngoscopy has been reported to improve airway visualization; however, whether improved visualization reduces intubation attempts in surgical patients is unclear. ⋯ In this study among adults having surgical procedures who required single-lumen endotracheal intubation for general anesthesia, hyperangulated video laryngoscopy decreased the number of attempts needed to achieve endotracheal intubation compared with direct laryngoscopy at a single academic medical center in the US. Results suggest that video laryngoscopy may be a preferable approach for intubating patients undergoing surgical procedures.

The effects of video double-lumen tubes on intubation complications in patients undergoing thoracic surgery: A randomised controlled study.
Tracheal injuries, vocal cord injuries, sore throat and hoarseness are common complications of double-lumen tube (DLT) intubation. ⋯ There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of moderate-to-severe tracheal injury and vocal cord injury between DLTs and VDLTs. While improving the first-attempt success rate, intubation with VDLT increased the incidence of postoperative 24 h sore throat and hoarseness.

Nonintubated spontaneous ventilation versus intubated mechanical ventilation anesthesia for video-assisted thoracic surgery in terms of perioperative complications and practitioners' workload assessments: a pilot randomized control study.
The use of nonintubated video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (NI-VATS) has been increasingly reported to yield favourable outcomes. However, this technology has not been routinely used because its advantages and safety have not been fully confirmed. The aim of this study was to assess the safety and feasibility of nonintubated spontaneous ventilation (NI-SV) anesthesia compared to intubated mechanical ventilation (I-MV) anesthesia in VATS by evaluating of perioperative complications and practitioners' workloads. ⋯ The NI-SV anesthesia was feasible for VATS in the selected patients, with a greater incidence of intraoperative airway intervention events than I-MV anesthesia, and with more surgical effort required by anesthesiologists.
