Out-of-hospital airway management in the United States.
Prior studies describe airway management by single EMS agencies, regions or states. We sought to characterize out-of-hospital airway management interventions, outcomes and complications across the United States. ⋯ In this study characterizing out-of-hospital airway management across the United States, we observed low out-of-hospital ETI success rates. These data may guide national efforts to improve the quality of out-of-hospital airway management.

Airway management in pediatric patients at referring hospitals compared to a receiving tertiary pediatric ICU.
To describe the current practice of pediatric airway management at referring hospitals and the associated adverse events compared to a receiving tertiary pediatric ICU. ⋯ Provider reported adverse TIAEs are common during airway management in children requiring critical care transport, but not higher compared to PICU intubations. Most inter-hospital transport patients are intubated with an uncuffed tracheal tube. Subsequent tracheal tube change from uncuffed to cuffed tube is rarely required.

Laryngoscope plastic blades in scheduled general anesthesia patients: a comparative randomized study.
To compare two brands of disposable plastic laryngoscope blades, Vital View plastic blades and Heine XP plastic blades, with the reusable Heine Classic+ Macintosh metal blades. ⋯ Intubation may be more challenging when using Heine XP plastic blades but no significant difference exists between Vital-View plastic blades and Heine Classic+ metal blades.

Out-of-hospital tracheal intubation with single-use versus reusable metal laryngoscope blades: a multicenter randomized controlled trial.
Emergency tracheal intubation is reported to be more difficult with single-use plastic than with reusable metal laryngoscope blades in both inhospital and out-of-hospital settings. Single-use metal blades have been developed but have not been compared with conventional metal blades. This controlled trial compares the efficacy and safety of single-use metal blades with reusable metal blades in out-of-hospital emergency tracheal intubation. ⋯ First-pass out-of-hospital tracheal intubation success with single-use metal laryngoscopy blades was noninferior to first-pass success with reusable metal laryngoscope blades.

Endotracheal intubation in a neonatal population remains associated with a high risk of adverse events.
There has been a significant increase in premedication use for neonatal intubation in the UK over the past decade. We aimed to determine the adverse events during neonatal intubation using the most commonly used premedication regimen in the UK. ⋯ Despite the widespread move to premedication for neonatal intubation, many deficiencies in everyday practice remain. The rate of haemodynamic complications is high in this commonly used premedication regimen. This study shows that there are important factors to control at the local level in terms of timely preparation and administration of premedication drugs, training and supervision of staff carrying out this high-risk procedure.
