To assess exercise induced analgesia (EIA) and pain sensitivity in hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA) and to study the effects of neuromuscular exercise and surgery on these parameters. ⋯ To our knowledge, this is the first study of EIA in OA patients. Despite increased pain sensitivity, OA patients had a normal function of EIA.

Nocebo hyperalgesia induced by social observational learning.
Nocebo effects can be acquired by verbal suggestion, but it is unknown whether they can be induced through observational learning and whether they are influenced by factors known to influence pain perception, such as pain anxiety or pain catastrophizing. Eighty-five female students (aged 22.5 ± 4.4 years) were randomly assigned to one of three conditions. Participants in the control condition (CC) received information that an ointment had no effect on pain perception. ⋯ The nocebo response correlated with pain catastrophizing but not with pain anxiety or somatosensory amplification. A nocebo response to pressure pain was induced by observational learning but not by verbal suggestion. This finding highlights the importance of investigating the influence of observational learning on nocebo hyperalgesia.

Allodynia in migraine: clinical observation and role of prophylactic therapy.
There is no study on the role of prophylactic therapy on allodynia in patients with migraine. We report the predictors of allodynia in migraine and the effect of divalproate or amitriptyline in alleviating allodynia. ⋯ 71.4% migraineurs had allodynia that was related to the duration, severity, frequency of migraine, and female gender. Divalproate and amitriptyline were equally effective in relieving allodynia.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffects of nefopam on early postoperative hyperalgesia after cardiac surgery.
The purpose of this randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled study was to evaluate the effect of nefopam, a centrally acting antinociceptive compound, on the development of hyperalgesia after sternotomy. Preventive strategy giving nefopam from the early stage of anesthesia was compared with a postoperative strategy only and placebo. ⋯ Nefopam administered during the perioperative period slightly reduced acute hyperalgesia after cardiac surgery, but this was not associated with improved analgesic efficacy.

Experimental knee pain evoke spreading hyperalgesia and facilitated temporal summation of pain.
This study evaluated the deep-tissue pressure pain sensitivity and temporal summation of pain within and around healthy knees exposed to experimental pain. ⋯ The increased sensitivity and temporal summation found in this study were exclusive to deep -tissue with no contralateral decreased pain sensitivity. The study showed that acute knee joint pain leads to hyperalgesia and facilitated temporal summation in the infrapatellar fat pad and in muscles located distant to the injection site, in subjects with no history of knee pain.
