We present a case of an adolescent patient with a penetrating gunshot wound to the mouth requiring endotracheal intubation via rapid sequence intubation in the prehospital setting. The team used video laryngoscopy (VL) to secure the airway; however, continuous bloody secretions increased the complexity of the procedure and required the application of the Suction-Assisted Laryngoscopy and Airway Decontamination (SALAD) method to facilitate intubation. By utilizing the SALAD procedure, the field of view on the VL camera remained unobscured, and the patient's airway remained clear, allowing for an uneventful intubation procedure. ⋯ This is followed by permanently placing the large bore suction catheter under constant suction in the posterior pharynx or esophagus to keep the VL camera unobscured by vomit or blood to facilitate intubation. After the intubation, the suction catheter may be removed unless ongoing suction is required. Keeping the VL camera unobscured during the procedure may improve first-pass intubation success rate.

Understanding adolescent perspectives on prescribed opioids in the context of medical care for acute pain is needed to prevent opioid-related adverse outcomes. We explored factors that may influence opioid decision-making and use behaviors among adolescents prescribed opioids for acute pain. ⋯ Adolescents often demonstrated active and sound participation in shared opioid decision-making, influenced by complex integration of inputs and self-reflection. Conversely, potential factors that could contribute to risky behaviors included low personal risk perceptions, uncertainty about what constitutes opioid misuse, and avoidance of prescribed opioids despite extreme pain. Future studies may explore associations of adolescents' opioid decision-making with longer-term pain and opioid-related outcomes.

Braces have been a popular treatment option for scoliosis among healthcare professionals for many years. However, the effect of braces on scoliosis treatment remains a subject of ongoing debate and research. ⋯ Our study suggests that wearing a scoliosis brace may negatively affect an individual's vertical and standing long jumps, and forward reach distances. However, wearing or not wearing the brace had no significant effect on postural control and timed stand-up test. Long-term follow-up studies are needed to evaluate the overall effectiveness of scoliosis braces in treating AIS.

The number of people immigrating from one country to another is increasing worldwide. Research has shown that immigration background is associated with chronic pain (CP) and pain disability in adults. However, research in this issue in children and adolescents has yielded inconsistent results. ⋯ Furthermore, the association between immigration background and CP was higher in children (OR = 6.92, p <.001) and younger adolescents (OR = 1.66, p <.05) than in older adolescents. Children and adolescents with an immigration background are at higher risk for having CP -especially younger children- and HICP. More resources should be allocated in the prevention of CP and HICP in children and adolescents with an immigration background.
