Excessive alcohol consumption in adolescence can disrupt neural development and may augment pain perception. Recent studies have shown that the nucleus accumbens (NAc) shell is involved in mediating pain sensitivity after peripheral inflammation in rodent models of chronic pain and alcohol use disorder. Interestingly, there have been very few studies examining the impact of chronic ethanol exposure during adolescence on pain sensitivity in adulthood. ⋯ With phasic stimulation, aCIE rats also showed greater dopamine release compared with AIR-exposed rats. Inhibition of dopamine transmission targeted in the NAc shell reversed the aCIE-associated facilitation of mechanical allodynia in both sexes. These data suggest that aCIE exposure exacerbates pain sensitivity during withdrawal in an accumbal dopamine-dependent manner.

Spinal fusion, which is widely used in the surgical treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), limits the movements of the vertebral column. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the relationship between spinal mobility in the postoperative period with functional balance, quality of life, and perception of appearance in individuals with AIS. ⋯ In AIS, limitation of movement in the coronal, sagittal, and transverse planes is observed after fusion surgery. Spinal ROM is affected by the level of fusion performed at surgery. Postoperative spinal limitation of motion adversely affected functional balance, quality of life, and perception of appearance. We believe that comprehensive rehabilitation approaches that improve postoperative range of motion and increase functionality are important for optimal postoperative recovery.

ReviewA systematic review of culturally adapted physical activity interventions for culturally and linguistically diverse children and adolescents.
Limited evidence shows culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) children and adolescents are less active, compared to the general population. It is unclear, how physical activity interventions have been adapted for CALD children and adolescents to enhance engagement. This study aimed to review culturally adapted physical activity interventions targeting CALD children and adolescents. ⋯ A small number of studies found significant changes to increase physical activity levels. We found there is a lack of consistent evidence indicating that incorporating surface and/or deep structure adaptations result in significant changes in physical activity. Future research should focus on establishing higher quality methodology when developing culturally adapted interventions for CALD populations.

Research reveals that 1% of neoplasms in females under 17 years of age are ovarian neoplasms and though usually benign, malignant tumors may occur in the pediatric age group. This review considers various current concepts of these tumors including the epidemiology, risk factors, clinical presentations, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and treatment options including the need to provide fertility-sparing surgery as well as their potential impacts on the psychological well-being of children and adolescents. ⋯ We focused on the articles published in English between January 1, 2000, and August 31, 2023. Only a few articles published prior to 2000 were included for historical perspective.
