Presence of alcohol and other drug use within youth mental health presentations to the emergency department: A single-site retrospective observational study.
Youth mental health is a growing issue, which can be worsened by alcohol and other drug (AOD) use. The present study aimed to characterise the association of AOD use in youth presenting to an ED with a mental health crisis. ⋯ In New Zealand, it is not legal to sell alcohol to persons under 18 years; however, this was the most commonly identified drug impacting on youth mental health presentations. There is a known association between alcohol use and adverse mental health symptoms; therefore, efforts to decrease access to alcohol in this age group must continue, and harm reduction interventions to reduce clinically significant overdoses recommended.

ReviewFactors associated with child and adolescent electronic nicotine and non-nicotine delivery systems use: A scoping review.
To identify, characterise and broadly synthesise factors associated with child and adolescent electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) and/or electronic non-nicotine delivery systems (ENNDS) ever-use and/or current use. ⋯ The evidence base on factors associated with ENDS/ENNDS use in children and adolescents is rapidly developing, predominately by research concentrated in high income regions and focused on behavioural- and personality-related factors.

Our objective was to assess abnormalities of the odontoid-hip axis (OD-HA) angle in a mild scoliotic population to determine whether screening for malalignment would help predict the distinction between progressive and stable adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) at early stage. ⋯ Analysis of OD-HA suggests that AIS patients are almost three times more likely to have malalignment compared with a non-scoliotic population. Furthermore, analysis of coronal OD-HA is promising to help the clinician distinguish between stable and progressive thoracic scoliosis.

An accelerated epidemiological transition, spurred by economic development and urbanization, has led to a rapid transformation of the disease spectrum. However, this transition has resulted in a divergent change in the burden of infectious diseases between urban and rural areas. The objective of our study was to evaluate the long-term urban-rural disparities in infectious diseases among children, adolescents, and youths in China, while also examining the specific diseases driving these disparities. ⋯ A significant urban-rural disparity in notifiable infectious diseases among children, adolescents, and youths was evident from our study. The burden in urban areas exceeded that in rural areas by more than 2-fold, and this gap appears to be widening, particularly influenced by tuberculosis, scarlet fever, infectious diarrhea, and typhus. These findings underscore the urgent need for interventions to mitigate infectious diseases and address the growing urban-rural disparity.

Age at first drink and its influence on alcohol use behaviours in young adulthood: Evidence from an Australian household-based panel study.
Public health guidelines recommend delaying the initiation age for alcohol. However, the causal link between age-at-first-drink (AFD) and future alcohol use in young adulthood is uncertain. This study examined the association between AFD and alcohol-related outcomes at age 20 years using an Australian sample. ⋯ Study findings indicate an association between a higher AFD and consuming less alcohol in young adulthood, which could potentially support the scale-up of prevention programs to delay AFD among Australian adolescents.
