Review Meta Analysis
Meta-analysis of benefits of portal-superior mesenteric vein resection in pancreatic resection for ductal adenocarcinoma.
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma has a poor prognosis without surgery. No standard treatment has yet been accepted for patients with portal-superior mesenteric vein (PV-SMV) infiltration. The present meta-analysis aimed to compare the results of pancreatic resection with PV-SMV resection for suspected infiltration with the results of surgery without PV-SMV resection. ⋯ This meta-analysis showed increased postoperative mortality, higher rates of non-radical surgery and worse survival after pancreatic resection with PV-SMV resection. This may be related to more advanced disease in this group.

Review Meta AnalysisContinuous Positive Airway Pressure in Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Resistant Hypertension: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.
This study aimed to analyze the effect of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on blood pressure (BP) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and resistant hypertension. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated the effect of CPAP on BP in patients with OSA and resistant hypertension, indexed in MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library from inception until March 20, 2015, were included in the meta-analysis. ⋯ CPAP was also associated with reduction in nocturnal DBP (mean difference, -1.53 mm Hg, 95% CI, -3.07 to 0). The results indicated a favorable reduction in BP with CPAP treatment in patients with OSA and resistant hypertension.

Comparison of smith-petersen osteotomy, pedicular subtraction osteotomy, and poly-segmental wedge osteotomy in treating rigid thoracolumbar kyphotic deformity in ankylosing spondylitis a systematic review and meta-analysis.
This study aimed to compare Smith-Petersen osteotomy (SPO), poly-segmental wedge osteotomy (PWO) and pedicular subtraction osteotomy (PSO) in patients with rigid thoracolumbar kyphosis primarily caused by ankylosing spondylitis. The efficiency, efficacy and safety of these three osteotomies have not been compared systematically, and no illness-oriented surgical type selection strategy for the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis related to non-angular kyphosis has been reported. ⋯ To treat rigid thoracolumbar kyphosis, PSO showed higher efficiency and efficacy than SPO, and PWO had a higher efficacy than SPO. The risk of local biomechanical complications was greater in PWO than PSO. Bleeding was more severe in PSO than in SPO or PWO. The incidence of neural complications and systemic complications was similar.

Review Meta AnalysisSystematic review and meta-analysis of interventions for depression and anxiety in persons with multiple sclerosis.
Depression and anxiety are common in persons with multiple sclerosis (MS), and adversely affect fatigue, medication adherence, and quality of life. Though effective treatments for depression and anxiety exist in the general population, their applicability in the MS population has not been definitively established. ⋯ Pharmacological and psychological treatments for depression were effective in reducing depressive symptoms in MS. The data are insufficient to determine the effectiveness of treatments for anxiety.

Traditional Chinese Medications for Knee Osteoarthritis Pain: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.
Traditional Chinese medication (TCM) has analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). We conducted the first systematic review of the best quantitative and qualitative evidence currently available in order to evaluate the effectiveness of TCM in relieving pain in knee OA. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using three English and four Chinese biomedical databases from their inception through March 1, 2015. ⋯ This evidence suggests that TCM is safe and effective for improving pain, function, and wellness in treatments of knee OA. However, there is inherent clinical heterogeneity (diverse TCM formulations, controls, and treatment regimens) among the included trials. Despite these limitations, the potential analgesic effects of TCM warrant further methodologically rigorous research to determine the clinical implications of TCM on pain management in knee OA.
