Mortality in sepsis remains high. Studies on small cohorts have shown that red cell distribution width (RDW) is associated with mortality. The aim of this study was to validate these findings in a large multicenter cohort. ⋯ We found an association of RDW with mortality in septic patients and propose an optimal cutoff value for risk stratification. In a combined model with lactate, RDW shows equivalent diagnostic performance to Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score and APACHE IV score.

Multicenter StudyUsing an eLearning Module to Facilitate Sepsis Knowledge Acquisition Across Multiple Institutions and Learner Disciplines.
Guidelines exist for care of pediatric sepsis, but no study has assessed the benefit of electronic learning (eLearning) in this topic area. The objective of this multicenter study was to assess knowledge acquisition and retention for pediatric sepsis across multiple health care provider roles, using an adaptive and interactive eLearning module. ⋯ An eLearning module improved immediate and delayed pediatric sepsis knowledge in pediatric health care providers across multiple institutions and provider roles. Immediate knowledge gain was meaningful as indicated by effect sizes, although by the time of the delayed test, the effect was smaller. This module fills an important gap in currently available pediatric sepsis education.

Prognosis and Risk Factors of Sepsis Patients in Chinese Icus: A Retrospective Analysis of A Cohort Database.
Sepsis-3 proposed a new definition of septic shock that excluded patients without hyperlactacidemia. The data from China might help to elucidate the prognosis of this special patient group. ⋯ Patients with hypotension but without hyperlactacidemia in the ICU also show a high 28-day mortality, and some clinical factors may affect their prognosis and must be treated carefully in the future.

Clinical characteristics and prognosis in patients with urosepsis from intensive care unit in Shanghai, China: a retrospective bi-centre study.
The purpose of this study was to retrospectively analyze clinical characteristics and prognostic risk factors of urosepsis patients admitted to two intensive care units in Shanghai, China. ⋯ The patients with urosepsis were characterized by a higher proportion of female, older age, more percentage of comorbidities in this region, and patients with ESBLs (+) Escherichia coli infection were more prone to shock. Mechanical ventilation, comorbidity with CKD, APACHE II score and lactate were independent risk factors for death in urosepsis patient, but lactate level and APACHE II score had better predictive value for prognosis.

Influence of fluid balance on the prognosis of patients with sepsis.
Early and timely fluid treatment or resuscitation are the basic measures for the active treatment of sepsis. Our aim is to further explore the relationship between fluid balance and prognosis in patients with sepsis on a daily basis for 5 days. ⋯ In patients with sepsis, positive fluid balance on days 1, 2, and 3 was associated with adverse outcomes. For patients with fluid balance for three consecutive days, the "+/-/-", "-/ -/-", "-/-/+", "-/+/+", and "-/+/-" groups were less likely to die in hospital than the "+/+/+" group.
