Pediatric mental health emergency department visits from 2017 to 2022: A multicenter study.
The COVID-19 pandemic adversely affected children's mental health (MH) and changed patterns of MH emergency department (ED) utilization. Our objective was to assess how pediatric MH ED visits during the COVID-19 pandemic differed from expected prepandemic trends. ⋯ During the late pandemic, pediatric MH ED visits decreased below expected rates; however, visits by females and for specific conditions remained elevated, indicating a need for increased attention to these groups. Prolonged ED visit lengths may reflect inadequate availability of MH services.

The Effect of Contrast Rationing on the Development of Acute Kidney Injury During the Global Contrast Shortage.
In April of 2022, the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a global shortage of intravenous contrast media (ICM), which led our health care system to implement rationing measures. ⋯ The dramatic reduction in ICM use that resulted from the global shortage was not associated with a change in the incidence of AKI. This reinforces the results of previous studies which have failed to find evidence of a relationship between ICM administration and AKI.

Morbidity and Mortality of Hospital-Onset SARS-CoV-2 Infections Due to Omicron Versus Prior Variants : A Propensity-Matched Analysis.
Many hospitals have scaled back measures to prevent nosocomial SARS-CoV-2 infection given large decreases in the morbidity and mortality of SARS-CoV-2 infections for most people. A COVID-19 specific multiparametric and ECG-based score for the prediction of in-hospital mortality: ELCOVID score.
We aimed to develop and validate a COVID-19 specific scoring system, also including some ECG features, to predict all-cause in-hospital mortality at admission. Patients were retrieved from the ELCOVID study (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT04367129), a prospective, multicenter Italian study enrolling COVID-19 patients between May to September 2020. For the model validation, we randomly selected two-thirds of participants to create a derivation dataset and we used the remaining one-third of participants as the validation set. ⋯ The derived risk-scoring system, namely EL COVID score, showed a moderate discriminatory capacity and good calibration. A cut-off score of ≥ 4 had a sensitivity of 78.4% and 65.2% specificity in predicting all-cause in-hospital mortality. ELCOVID score represents a valid, reliable, sensitive, and inexpensive scoring system that can be used for the prognostication of COVID-19 patients at admission and may allow the earlier identification of patients having a higher mortality risk who may be benefit from more aggressive treatments and closer monitoring.

Exploring the Association of Metabolic Syndrome with In-Hospital Survival of Older Patients Hospitalized with COVID-19: Beyond Chronological Age.
Despite the variability and complexity of geriatric conditions, few COVID-19 reports of clinical characteristic prognostication provide data specific to oldest-old adults (over age 85), and instead generally report broadly as 65 and older. ⋯ Metabolic syndrome measures are important individual predictors of COVID-19 outcomes. Building on prior examinations that metabolic syndrome is associated with death and ARDS across all ages, this analysis supports that metabolic syndrome criteria may be more relevant than chronological age as risk factors for poor outcomes attributed to COVID-19.
