Evaluate the safety and efficacy of the Janus kinase (JAK)1/JAK2 inhibitor ruxolitinib in COVID-19-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome requiring mechanical ventilation. ⋯ The observed reduction in 28-day mortality rate between ruxolitinib and placebo in mechanically ventilated patients with COVID-19-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome was not statistically significant; however, the trial was underpowered owing to early termination.

Randomized Controlled TrialTailored text message and web intervention for smoking cessation in U.S. socioeconomically-disadvantaged young adults: A randomized controlled trial.
The prevalence of cigarette smoking in young adults is higher among those with socioeconomic disadvantage than those without. Low treatment-seeking among young adult smokers is compounded by few efficacious smoking cessation interventions for this group, particularly socioeconomically-disadvantaged young adults (SDYA) who smoke cigarettes. The goal of this study was to test a tailored smoking-cessation intervention for SDYA. 343 SDYA aged 18-30 living in the U. ⋯ A tailored text message intervention for SDYA increased smoking abstinence and confidence to quit at the end-of-treatment. Findings may have been influenced by recruitment at the start of the COVID pandemic but suggest that text messaging is an acceptable and efficacious cessation strategy for SDYA smokers. Future studies should examine the impact on longer-term smoking-cessation and importance of intervention tailoring for SDYA.

Randomized Controlled TrialEvaluation of the conventional and modified aerosol boxes during tracheal intubation in normal and difficult airways: a randomized, crossover, manikin simulation study.
The aim of this study was to evaluate conventional and modified aerosol boxes in terms of intubation time, first-pass intubation success, and mouth-to-mouth distance between the laryngoscopist and patient during tracheal intubation in simulated patients with normal and difficult airways. Sixteen anesthesiologists performed tracheal intubations with direct laryngoscope or three different videolaryngoscopes (McGRATH MAC videolaryngoscope, C-MAC videolaryngoscope, and Pentax-AWS) without an aerosol box or with a conventional or a modified aerosol boxes in simulated manikins with normal and difficult airways. Intubation time, first-pass intubation success, and mouth-to-mouth distance during tracheal intubation were recorded. ⋯ However, no significant differences were found in intubation time between no aerosol box and the modified aerosol box for normal and difficult airways (Pcorrected = 0.336 and Pcorrected = 0.112, respectively). The use of conventional or modified aerosol boxes significantly extended the mouth-to-mouth distances compared to not using an aerosol box during tracheal intubation with each laryngoscope (all Pcorrected < 0.05), and the distances were not different between the conventional and modified boxes in normal and difficult airways. The use of modified aerosol box did not increase intubation time and could help maintain a distance from the simulated patients with normal and difficult airways.

An online community peer support intervention to promote COVID-19 vaccine information among essential workers: a randomized trial.
Vaccine hesitancy is still rampant in the United States, including health care personnel. Vaccination of frontline essential workers (e.g. health care workers) is very important, especially during a pandemic. We tested the efficacy of a 4-week online, peer-led intervention (Harnessing Online Peer Education) to promote requests for COVID-19 vaccine information among essential workers. ⋯ Results suggest peer-led online community groups may help to disseminate health information, aid public health efforts, and combat vaccine hesitancy. Key MessagesThe odds of requesting vaccine information was 13 times in the intervention group.Peer-led online communities may help to disseminate information and aid public health efforts to combat vaccine hesitancy.

Interim analysis from a phase 2 randomized trial of EuCorVac-19: a recombinant protein SARS-CoV-2 RBD nanoliposome vaccine.
Numerous vaccine strategies are being advanced to control SARS-CoV-2, the cause of the COVID-19 pandemic. EuCorVac-19 (ECV19) is a recombinant protein nanoparticle vaccine that displays the SARS-CoV-2 receptor-binding domain (RBD) on immunogenic nanoliposomes. ⋯ ECV19 was generally well-tolerated and induced antibodies in a dose-dependent manner that neutralized SARS-CoV-2. The unique liposome display approach of ECV19, which lacks any immunogenic protein components besides the antigen itself, coupled with the lack of increased adverse events during boosting suggest the vaccine platform may be amenable to multiple boosting regimes in the future. Taken together, these findings motivate further investigation of ECV19 in larger scale clinical testing that is underway.
