Vitamin D deficiency may cause adverse effects on the cardiovascular system as well as many other systems. The risk of vitamin D deficiency increases during adolescence, when the growth rate is high, due to reasons such as limited sun exposure, inadequate dietary calcium, and vitamin D intake. ⋯ It was observed that administration of 2000 IU vitamin D treatment for a period of 12 weeks to non-obese adolescent girls with vitamin D deficiency contributed positively to cardiac systolic and diastolic function.

The assessments of left ventricular (LV) longitudinal systolic dynamics in children with ventricular septal defect (VSD) have achieved a major milestone in the evaluation of LV systolic function. ⋯ The LVM among children with VSD is lower than controls but there is no difference between LV function in subjects and controls. There is a linear increase of LVM with descending aorta blood flow.

Diagnostic Ultrasound: On-Site Diagnosis of Type B Aortic Dissection During Cataract Surgery.
We report a case of aortic dissection occurring during cataract surgery under local anesthesia, which was diagnosed on-site by point-of-care ultrasound. Intimal flaps were detected in the abdominal aorta, whereas the parasternal view showed no abnormalities in the aortic root or left ventricular function. ⋯ Subsequent computed tomography (CT) confirmed the point-of-care diagnosis. The patient was transferred to a tertiary hospital for medical treatment.

HFrEF causes significant morbidity and mortality and represents a major public health burden. Recently, there have been significant scientific advances in the treatment of HFrEF, with ARNI, BB, MRA, and SGLT-2i forming the GDMT for HFrEF. ⋯ In addition, new initiation and titration procedures have recently been introduced that may progressively improve the management and prognosis of HFrEF. Further efforts are also needed to improve the use of GDMT, which is currently underutilized.
