Brain-predicted age difference estimated using DeepBrainNet is significantly associated with pain and function-a multi-institutional and multiscanner study.
Brain age predicted differences (brain-PAD: predicted brain age minus chronological age) have been reported to be significantly larger for individuals with chronic pain compared with those without. However, a debate remains after one article showed no significant differences. Using Gaussian Process Regression, an article provides evidence that these negative results might owe to the use of mixed samples by reporting a differential effect of chronic pain on brain-PAD across pain types. ⋯ Moreover, brain-PAD was significantly related to multiple variables underlying the multidimensional pain experience. This comprehensive work adds evidence of pain type-specific effects of chronic pain on brain age. This could help in the clarification of the debate around possible relationships between brain aging mechanisms and pain.

After hospital discharge, patients who had sepsis have increased mortality. We sought to estimate factors associated with postdischarge mortality and how they vary with time after discharge. ⋯ Acute physiologic derangements and organ dysfunction were associated with postdischarge mortality with the associations decreasing over time.

ReviewAdults are just big kids: pediatric considerations for adult critical care nephrology.
In recent years, there has been growing attention to pediatric kidney health, especially pediatric acute kidney injury (AKI). However, there has been limited focus on the role of pediatric AKI on adult kidney health, specifically considerations for the critical care physician. ⋯ The number of pediatric AKI survivors continues to increase, leading to a higher burden of chronic kidney disease and other long-term co-morbidities later in life. Adult medical providers should consider pediatric history and illnesses to inform the care they provide. Such knowledge may help internists, nephrologists, and intensivists alike to improve risk stratification, including a lower threshold for monitoring for AKI and kidney dysfunction in their patients.

Educating patients undergoing surgery for LDH is important to maintain the proper performance of body mechanics. ⋯ Preoperative education on body mechanics increases the physical functioning of patients with LDH and facilitates the integration of information into their daily activities.
