We aimed to find out whether the combined treatment of acupuncture and oral medication is more effective than sole oral medication in reducing pain and improving knee function at the end of treatment and after short-term period (4-6 weeks after treatment). Second, if it is effective, we investigated whether the effect surpasses the minimal clinically important difference. ⋯ The existing evidence suggests that adjuvant acupuncture may play a role in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. However, physicians should be aware of adverse effects such as hematoma in adjuvant acupuncture treatment.

Association between thyroid dysfunction and venous thromboembolism: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Thyroid dysfunction plays an important role in the development of cardiovascular disease. However, its relationship with venous thromboembolism (VTE) remains unclear. We performed a meta-analysis of published cohort and case-control studies to investigate the association between thyroid dysfunction and VTE comprehensively. ⋯ Patients with thyroid dysfunction have an increased risk of VTE. Therefore, it is recommended to perform thyroid function screening routinely in patients at high risk of VTE.

Inflammatory bowel disease can reduce ovarian reserve function in women: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the role of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in ovarian reserve functions. ⋯ IBD could reduce ovarian reserve function in women of reproductive age, and patients should plan for conception as soon as possible under permissible conditions.

To investigate glucose and lipid metabolism in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) with and without Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT). In the present study, 103 women were included as controls and a total of 213 patients (49 patients with HT and 164 patients without HT) diagnosed with PCOS. The oral glucose tolerance, insulin release, thyroid function, and lipid levels were measured. ⋯ PCOS Patients with HT + had higher FINS, 60FINS, 120FINS, and insulin resistance levels than those without Hashimoto's thyroiditis group. HT + group had higher total cholesterol, and thyroid-stimulating hormone levels, while free triiodothyronine, and free thyroxine levels were significantly lower. PCOS can lead to disorders of glucolipid metabolism, PCOS with Hashimoto's thyroiditis may further exacerbate disorders of glucose and lipid metabolism, and therefore thyroid function assessment in patients with PCOS needs to be emphasized.

Previous studies have explored the effectiveness of dexmedetomidine on postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) in elderly patients with fracture. However, no systematic review has addressed this issue. Thus, this systematic review investigated the effectiveness of dexmedetomidine on POCD in elderly patients with fracture. ⋯ The results of this study showed that dexmedetomidine could effectively manage POCD in elderly patients with fracture. However, the overall quality of included trials is not too high. Thus, the present findings should be cautiously referred.
