The popular notion that the need for attention drives non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) serves to stigmatise rather than understand this warning sign of underlying psychological/psychiatric disorder. Despite the pervasiveness of NSSI in clinical and community settings, effective treatments for this behaviour are lacking. This qualitative research aims to understand the motivations of NSSI in adolescents/young adults in a mental health facility in Singapore. ⋯ Committing NSSI solely for attention-seeking is a myth that perpetuates the stigma and hinders those in need of psychological care from seeking appropriate treatment. NSSIs may be warning signs that indicate not only intrapersonal conflicts but external environments that are perceived unsafe to deal with these intrapersonal conflicts. An understanding of the underlying motives will facilitate better treatment of individuals presenting with NSSI.

Low skeletal mass predicts poor prognosis of elderly patients after emergency laparotomy: A single Asian institution experience.
Sarcopenia, defined as low skeletal muscle mass and poor muscle function, has been associated with worse postoperative recovery. This study aims to evaluate the significance of low muscle mass in the elderly who require emergency surgeries and the postoperative outcomes. ⋯ Patients with low muscle mass have significantly higher post-surgical complication rates and increased mortality.

Lumbopelvic Pain in Pregnancy in a Diverse Urban Patient Population: Prevalence and Risk Factors.
Objective: Pregnancy lumbopelvic pain (PLPP) is a common ailment during pregnancy with physical, psychosocial, and economic consequences. Prior literature has focused on majority Caucasian patient populations; none have focused on Hispanic populations, especially in the United States. The purpose of this study was to determine the proportion of pregnant people who experience PLPP in mostly Hispanic population. ⋯ Conclusions: In a cohort of majority Hispanic people, we found that 63% of respondents had PLPP. Our study found that a higher PMI score and financial instability were factors influencing PLPP. Clinicians should be alert to pregnant people who express their difficulties with activities of daily living as they may be at risk of PLPP, and could benefit from further evaluation and treatment.

The purpose of this narrative review is to give an overview about the effects of multimodal prehabilitation and current existing and prospectively planned studies. The potential efficacy of exercise in the context of prehabilitation ranges from preoperatively improving patients' functional capacity to inducing cellular mechanisms that affect organ perfusion via endothelial regeneration, anti-inflammatory processes and tumour defense. ⋯ The concept of prehabilitation contains the features, namely preoperative exercise, nutritional intervention and psychological support. Preoperative exercise holds potential molecular effects that can be utilized in the perioperative period in order to improve patients' postoperative outcome. Future multimodal prehabilitation trials must specifically clarify the clinical impact of this concept on patients' quality of life after major cancer surgery and cancer-specific survival.

Human respiratory viruses induce a wide breadth of disease phenotypes and outcomes of varying severity. Innovative models that recapitulate the human respiratory tract are needed to study such viruses, understand the virus-host interactions underlying replication and pathogenesis, and to develop effective countermeasures for prevention and treatment. Human organoid models provide a platform to study virus-host interactions in the proximal to distal lung in the absence of a human in vivo model. These cultures fill the niche of a suitable ex vivo model that represents the in vivo lung environment and encapsulates the structure and function of the native human lung.
