Approximately 60% to 90% of patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) show nonsuicidal self-injurious behavior (NSSI) with cutting being the most frequently applied method. One of NSSI's functions is to reduce aversive tension. Previous studies have found a tension-reducing effect of painful tissue injury by an incision. ⋯ Our findings confirm that among BPD patients, the nociceptive input leads to stress reduction. In contrast, the impact of tissue damage on stress reduction was relatively small. In addition, the results suggest that painful stimuli lead to a greater stress reduction in BPD patients compared with HCs.

Comparative StudyAnaesthetic-induced cardioprotection in an experimental model of the Takotsubo syndrome - isoflurane vs. propofol.
Takotsubo syndrome (TS) is an acute cardiac condition with a substantial mortality for which no specific treatment is available. We have previously shown that isoflurane attenuates the development of left ventricular (LV) dysfunction in an experimental TS-model. We compared the effects of equi-anaesthetic doses of isoflurane, propofol and ketamine+midazolam on haemodynamics, global and regional LV systolic function and the activation of intracellular metabolic pathways in experimental TS. We hypothesized that cardioprotection in experimental TS is specific for isoflurane. ⋯ In an experimental model of TS, isoflurane, but not propofol, exerts a cardioprotective effect. The proteomic analysis suggests that inflammation might be involved in pathogenesis of TS.

Altered liver function in patients undergoing veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy.
Multiple organ dysfunction can occur in patients undergoing Veno-arterial Extra Corporal Membrane Oxygenation (VA-ECMO); however, liver function has not been well studied in this setting. ⋯ A substantial proportion of patients needing VA-ECMO have early ELE, which usually improves over days. The prognostic implications are not evident.

[Arthroscopic tenodesis or tenotomy of the long head of the biceps tendon in preselected patients : Does it make a difference?]
Are there clinical, cosmetic and/or structural differences between tenotomy and tenodesis of the long head of the biceps tendon (LHB) in patients selected according to commonly used indication criteria? ⋯ In patients preselected according to routinely used indication parameters (e.g. age, BMI and functional requirements of the shoulder) both LHB-TD and LHB-TT can achieve good to very good functional and cosmetic results with high patient satisfaction.
