The rationing of medical resources became a common practice during the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic. To cope with overwhelming patient numbers, hospitals were forced to adopt "crisis standards of care" (CSC) guidelines, which allow physicians to navigate the task of rationing health care resources in both an effective and ethically sound manner. The Military Health System currently has clinical guidelines for mass casualty incident (MCI) triage but lacks deployed Role 3 intensive care unit (ICU) CSC guidelines. ⋯ S. expeditionary medical force for future conflicts. A battlefield CSC will allow military critical care physicians and nurses to manage overwhelmed ICUs and make better triage decisions, allowing them to provide a higher quality of care to the collective. In this commentary, we explore the need for Wartime CSC in the battlefield Role 3 ICU and the tools and methods used by civilian and military institutions to create and enact CSCs throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Effectiveness of Heterologous COVID-19 Vaccine Booster in Korean Elderly Population, 2022.
We conducted a cohort study to assess vaccine effectiveness (VE) of coronavirus disease 2019 vaccine combinations on severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 critical infection and death among elderly population in Korea. From January to August 2022, VE against death for 4 doses mRNA recipients was 96.1%, whereas 1-dose viral vector + 3-dose mRNA recipients had VE of 90.8%.

Background: Colchicine has been proposed as a cytokine storm-blocking agent for COVID-19 due to its efficacy as an anti-inflammatory drug. The findings of the studies were contentious on the role of colchicine in preventing deterioration in COVID-19 patients. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of colchicine in COVID-19-hospitalized patients. ⋯ Furthermore, we summarized 36 published colchicine studies, including 114,878 COVID-19 patients. Conclusions: COVID-19-hospitalized patients who were given colchicine had poorer outcomes in terms of the duration of supplemental oxygen use and the length of their hospital stay. Therefore, based on these findings, the use of colchicine is not recommended for COVID-19-hospitalized adults.

Early during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, national population-based seroprevalence surveys were conducted in some countries; however, this was not done in Germany. In particular, no seroprevalence surveys were planned for the summer of 2022. In the context of the IMMUNEBRIDGE project, the GUIDE study was carried out to estimate seroprevalence on the national and regional levels. ⋯ These findings indicate that a large percentage of the adult German population has formed antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This will markedly lower the probability of an overburdening of the health care system by hospitalization and high occupancy of intensive care units due to future SARS-CoV-2 waves, depending on the viral characteristics of then prevailing variants.
