The risk of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission through corneal graft is an ongoing debate and leads to strict restrictions in corneas procurement, leading to a major decrease in eye banking activity. The aims of this study are to specifically assess the capacity of human cornea to be infected by SARS-CoV-2 and promote its replication ex vivo, and to evaluate the real-life risk of corneal contamination by detecting SARS-CoV-2 RNA in corneas retrieved in donors diagnosed with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and nonaffected donors. ⋯ In this study, we observed the expression of SARS-CoV-2 receptors and activators at the human ocular surface and a variable increase in viral RNA copies 24 hours after experimental infection of freshly excised human corneas. We also found viral RNA only in a very limited percentage of donors with positive nasopharyngeal PCR. The low rate of positivity in donors diagnosed with COVID-19 calls into question the utility of donor selection algorithms.

Healthcare Utilization Among Patients Diagnosed with COVID-19 in a Large Integrated Health System.
The demands for healthcare resources following a COVID-19 diagnosis are substantial, but not currently quantified. ⋯ Patients with COVID-19 seek healthcare frequently within 30 days of diagnosis, placing high demands on health systems. Identifying ways to support patients diagnosed with COVID-19 while adequately providing the usual recommended care to our communities will be important as we recover from the pandemic.

To build a model of local hospital utilization resulting from SARS-CoV-2 and to continuously update it with new data. ⋯ The genetic particle filtering algorithm that we have proposed is effective at modeling hospitalizations due to SARS-CoV-2. The methods used by our model can be reproduced by any major health care system for the purposes of resource planning, staffing, and population care management to create an effective forecasting regimen at scale.

ReviewCOMMON VARIABLE IMMUNODEFICIENCY: PREDISPOSING OR PROTECTIVE FACTOR FOR SEVERE COMPLICATIONS OF COVID-19?
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an emerging infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The usual presentation of the disease is a common cold-like illness but it can present with more severe and sometimes fatal manifestations. Immunocompromised patients such as those with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) also are among the infected population. ⋯ It is still unknown whether primary immunodeficiency interacts as a predisposing or protective factor against the severe forms of COVID-19. Substitute immunoglobulin (IG) therapy is the only treatment option for CVID. Some reports suggest that early administration of intravenous IGs or convalescent plasma infusion may positively influence the outcome of COVID-19 in these patients.

Videoconferencing for Large Animal Trauma Experiments During COVID-19: A Cross-Continent Experience.
COVID-19 shutdowns in many research facilities across North America impacted preclinical trauma-related research and development. Shutdown limited the speed and resources available for large animal experiments necessary for advancing medical devices and technologies. However, the pandemic led to the rapid adoption and expansion of videoconferencing in social circles, workplaces, and primary care health settings. Here, we describe the use of simple videoconferencing equipment to plan and carry out 3 total weeks of large animal experiments with a large, cross-continent, interdisciplinary team testing a novel technology in swine models of noncompressible intraabdominal hemorrhage and junctional hemorrhage. ⋯ The system described in this paper has the potential to reduce costs of trauma animal model development and allow for rapid testing and implementation of life-saving devices in settings with limited onsite personnel as experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
