While the augmented incidence of diabetes after COVID-19 has been widely confirmed, controversial results are available on the risk of developing hypertension during the COVID-19 pandemic. ⋯ We detected a significant increase in new-onset hypertension during the COVID-19 pandemic, which at the end of the observation period affected ~ 20% of the studied cohort, a percentage higher than the diagnosis of COVID-19 infection within the same time frame. This observation suggests that increased attention to hypertension screening should not be limited to individuals who are aware of having contracted the infection but should be extended to the entire population.

Socioeconomic Disparity in the Effect of SARS-CoV-2 on Outpatient Visits among People with Type 2 Diabetes in Taiwan.
The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) outbreak posed impact on healthcare. This study evaluated the effect of SARS-CoV-2 outbreak on the outpatient visits of patients with type 2 diabetes and determined the most affected groups. We analyzed Taiwan's National Health Insurance data, including 1,922,702 patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes from 2018 to 2021. ⋯ Patients with lower income in affluent areas displayed the highest likelihood of falling into Group 3. Patients with type 2 diabetes and low income from wealthy areas were vulnerable during the pandemic. This result emphasizes the need to target resources and support for this subgroup during such crises.

The emergence of new SARS-CoV-2 variants and the waning of immunity raise concerns about vaccine effectiveness and protection against COVID-19. While antibody response has been shown to correlate with the risk of infection with the original variant and earlier variants of concern, the effectiveness of antibody-mediated protection against Omicron and the factors associated with protection remain uncertain. ⋯ Data show that IgG and IgA induced by vaccines against the original strain or by hybrid immunization are valid correlates of protection against Omicron BA.1 despite immune escape and support the benefits of heterologous vaccination regimens to enhance antibodies and the prioritization of booster vaccination in individuals without recent infections.
