Systemic lidocaine fails to improve postoperative morphine consumption, postoperative recovery and quality of life in patients undergoing posterior spinal arthrodesis. A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial.
It is inconclusive whether the perioperative administration of systemic lidocaine provides effective postoperative analgesia and enhances recovery in major orthopaedic surgery. We hypothesised that in adolescent and adult patients undergoing posterior spinal arthrodesis, a perioperative lidocaine infusion would reduce opioid requirements during the first 24 postoperative h. ⋯ Eudra CT 2012-005264-98.

Impact of neoadjuvant chemotherapy and chemoradiotherapy on postoperative cardiopulmonary complications in patients with esophageal cancer.
The effectiveness of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (nCT) or chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) for esophageal cancer patients is well established. However, neoadjuvant therapy may induce severe adverse effects that could increase postoperative morbidity. The current study evaluated the impacts of nCT and nCRT on postoperative cardiopulmonary complications in patient with esophageal cancer. ⋯ Furthermore, a multivariate analysis revealed that nCRT was correlated with the incidence of pneumonia and NT-proBNP level significantly. The nCRT caused more cardiopulmonary toxicity than nCT. The strategies are needed to prevent the postoperative cardiopulmonary complications especially in patients with nCRT treatment.

Comparison of the effects of sugammadex and neostigmine on postoperative nausea and vomiting.
The aim of our study is to compare the effects of sugammadex and neostigmine, used for neuromuscular blockage antagonism, on postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). ⋯ At the end of our study comparing neostigmine with sugammadex for neuromuscular blockage antagonism, we found use of sugammadex had lower incidence of PONV in the postoperative 1st hour and less anti-emetic use in 24 hours of monitoring.

Does continuous wound infiltration enhance baseline intravenous multimodal analgesia after posterior spinal fusion surgery? A randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study.
There has been a growing interest in continuous local anaesthetic wound infiltration as a non-opioid technique for postoperative pain relief. The impact of this modality on baseline analgesia after spinal fusion surgery has however been inconclusive. We tested whether continuous wound infiltration with ropivacaine can enhance postoperative analgesia compared to a baseline intravenous multimodal analgesia protocol after spinal fusion surgery. ⋯ Our findings indicate that no additional analgesia was provided with continuous wound infiltration of ropivacaine compared to a baseline intravenous multimodal analgesia protocol after spinal fusion surgery.
