Outcomes and their State-Level Variation in Patients Undergoing Surgery with Perioperative SARS-CoV-2 Infection in the USA: A Prospective Multicenter Study.
To report the 30-day outcomes of patients with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection undergoing surgery in the USA. ⋯ Patients with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection have a significantly high risk for postoperative complications, especially elderly males. Postponing elective surgery and adopting non-operative management, when reasonable, should be considered in the USA during the pandemic peaks.

Effects of Community-based Exercise Prehabilitation for Patients Scheduled for Colorectal Surgery With High Risk for Postoperative Complications: Results of a Randomized Clinical Trial.
To assess the effects of a 3-week community-based exercise program on 30-day postoperative complications in high-risk patients scheduled for elective colorectal resection for (pre)malignancy. ⋯ Exercise prehabilitation reduced postoperative complications in high-risk patients scheduled to undergo elective colon resection for (pre)malignancy. Prehabilitation should be considered as usual care in high-risk patients scheduled for elective colon, and probably also rectal, surgery.

Association of postoperative complications with persistent post-surgical pain: a multicentre prospective cohort study.
Persistent post-surgical pain is an important and under-recognised problem that is difficult to treat. Postoperative complications have been identified as possible risk factors for persistent post-surgical pain. We conducted a secondary analysis of the Measurement of Exercise Tolerance before Surgery (METS) cohort study to characterise the association of major postoperative complications with post-surgical pain at 30 days and 1 yr after major surgery. ⋯ Patients who developed major complications were more likely to report pain at 30 days and possibly 1 yr after surgery. Research is necessary to validate these findings and delineate underlying mechanisms.

Lasting Symptoms After Esophageal Resection (LASER): European Multicenter Cross-sectional Study.
To identify the most prevalent symptoms and those with greatest impact upon health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among esophageal cancer survivors. ⋯ Two-thirds of patients experience significant symptoms more than 1 year after surgery. The 3 key symptoms associated with poor HRQOL identified in this study should be further validated, and could be used in clinical practice to identify patients who require increased support.

Despite many developments, postoperative bile leakage (POBL) remains a relatively common postoperative complication after laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) and open liver resection (OLR). This study aimed to assess the incidence and clinical impact of POBL in patients undergoing LLR and OLR in a large international multicenter cohort using a propensity score-matched analysis. ⋯ Patients after LLR seem to experience a lower rate of CR-POBL as compared with the open approach. Our findings suggest that in patients after LLR, the clinical impact of CR-POBL is less than after OLR.
