Magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging and volumetric measurements of the brain in patients with postcancer fatigue: a randomized controlled trial.
Postcancer fatigue is a frequently occurring problem, impairing quality of life. Until now, little is known about (neuro) physiological factors determining postcancer fatigue. For non-cancer patients with chronic fatigue syndrome, certain characteristics of brain morphology and metabolism have been identified in previous studies. We investigated whether these volumetric and metabolic traits are a reflection of fatigue in general and thus also of importance for postcancer fatigue. ⋯ No relation was found between postcancer fatigue and the studied volumetric and metabolic markers. This may suggest that, although postcancer fatigue and chronic fatigue syndrome show strong resemblances as a clinical syndrome, the underlying physiology is different.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyImpact of fingolimod therapy on magnetic resonance imaging outcomes in patients with multiple sclerosis.
To assess the impact of fingolimod (FTY720) therapy on magnetic resonance imaging measures of inflammatory activity and tissue damage in patients participating in a 2-year, placebo-controlled, phase 3 study. ⋯ These results, coupled with the significant reductions in relapse rates and disability progression reported previously, support the positive impact on long-term disease evolution.

Telmisartan on top of antihypertensive treatment does not prevent progression of cerebral white matter lesions in the prevention regimen for effectively avoiding second strokes (PRoFESS) MRI substudy.
High blood pressure is one of the main risk factors for cerebral white matter lesions (WMLs). There is limited evidence from one randomized trial that blood pressure-lowering is able to slow WML progression. We investigated whether telmisartan prevents WML progression in the imaging substudy of the Prevention Regimen for Effectively Avoiding Second Strokes (PRoFESS) trial. ⋯ Treatment with telmisartan on top of existing antihypertensive medication did not result in significant blood pressure-lowering and did not prevent the progression of WML in patients with a recent ischemic stroke in this patient cohort. Our analysis is limited by the relatively short follow-up period. Clinical Trial Registration- URL: http://clinicaltrials.gov. Unique Identifier: NCT00153062.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative StudyPrognostic utility of magnetic resonance imaging in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy: substudy of a randomized trial.
To investigate the effects of hypothermia treatment on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) patterns of brain injury in newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy compared with normothermia, including the prognostic utility of MRI for death and/or disability at a postnatal age of 2 years. ⋯ Brain injury on T1- and T2-weighted MRI is reduced in hypothermia-treated newborns. Abnormal MRI findings are prognostic of long-term outcome in moderate to severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy regardless of treatment with hypothermia.

Fluoxetine has neuroprotective effects after cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation in mouse.
Fluoxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, is protective in a rat focal ischaemia model via anti-inflammatory mechanisms. Cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CA/CPR) were performed in mice to test the hypothesis that fluoxetine protects the brain following global cerebral ischaemia, even when administered after an insult. ⋯ Our data showed that 10mg/kg fluoxetine administered following global cerebral ischaemia decreases neuronal damage. Although long-term neuroprotection needs further study, the results of our study suggest that fluoxetine may have therapeutic potential when administered after global cerebral ischaemia, cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
