The totaled health risks in vascular events (THRIVE) score predicts ischemic stroke outcomes independent of thrombolytic therapy in the NINDS tPA trial.
To date, no ischemic stroke outcome prediction scores have been validated for use in the setting of both endovascular and non-endovascular stroke treatments. The Totaled Health Risks in Vascular Events (THRIVE) score has been previously validated in patients undergoing endovascular stroke treatment, and we hypothesized that it would perform similarly well in patients receiving intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) or no acute therapy. ⋯ The THRIVE score provides accurate prediction of long-term neurologic outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke regardless of treatment modality. Both the THRIVE score and tPA administration predict outcome, but the THRIVE score does not influence the impact of tPA on outcome, and tPA administration does not influence the impact of THRIVE score on outcome.

Relationship between plasma high-mobility group box-1 levels and clinical outcomes of ischemic stroke.
High-mobility group box-1 (HMGB1) is regarded as a central mediator of inflammation and involved in many inflammatory diseases. This study aimed to investigate impact of plasma HMGB1 level on 1-year clinical outcomes of ischemic stroke. ⋯ Plasma HMGB1 level represents a novel biomarker for predicting 1-year clinical outcomes of ischemic stroke.

Methanol poisoning is one of the most important poisoning due to drinking of illegal and non-standard alcoholic beverage in some countries. Relatively limited studies have been carried out to identify the prognostic factors in methanol poisoning. ⋯ Regarding the results of this study, it can be suggested that coma, PaCO2 and hyperglycemia on admission time could be used as strong predictors of poor outcome.

Late effects of radial artery vs saphenous vein grafting for multivessel coronary bypass surgery in diabetics: a propensity-matched analysis.
To determine whether the use of the radial artery (RA) vs the saphenous vein (SV) as the second grafting conduit with the internal thoracic artery (ITA) confers a late-survival advantage in diabetes mellitus (DM). ⋯ Our analysis indicated that RA grafting confers a significant late-survival advantage and, thus, supports its liberal use in DM patients undergoing multivessel CABG.

Occurrence of parastomal hernia is considered a near inevitable consequence of stoma formation, making their management a common clinical dilemma. This article reviews the outcomes of different surgical approaches for hernia repair and describes in detail the laparoscopic Sugarbaker technique, which has been shown to have lower recurrence rates than other methods. Also reviewed is the current literature on the impact of prophylactic mesh placement during ostomy formation.
