Spray on skin improves psychosocial functioning in pediatric burns patients: a randomized controlled trial.
Microskin is a sprayed on, computer color-matched, skin camouflage which can last for up to 5 days after application. It binds to the epidermis and the patient can sweat and swim with it on. The purpose of the current study was to determine whether Microskin produces psychosocial benefit in pediatric burns patients. ⋯ Microskin improves psychosocial functioning in pediatric burn patients and is well-tolerated and acceptable. The small sample size precludes sophisticated statistical analyses and generalization of results. There is a need for a full scale randomized controlled study of Microskin with a larger sample size.

A prospective randomized clinical trial to investigate the effect of silicone gel sheeting (Cica-Care) on post-traumatic hypertrophic scar among the Chinese population.
This study aimed to determine the efficacy of silicone gel (Cica-Care) on severe post-traumatic hypertophic scars among the Chinese population. ⋯ This study indicated that silicone gel sheeting (Cica-Care) was effective to reduce thickness, pain, itchiness and pliability of the severe hypertrophic scar among the Chinese population. The moisturization effect of the tough and hard scar might contribute to the reduction of the skin thickness after 6 month's intervention.

The assessment of erythema and thickness on burn related scars during pressure garment therapy as a preventive measure for hypertrophic scarring.
The aim of this study was threefold: (1) Assess the pressure loss of two types of pressure garments that are used in the treatment of hypertrophic scars after burn injury, (2) investigate the influence of two different levels of compression on erythema and thickness of burn scars and (3) examine the association between erythema and thickness. The study was a prospective trial in which 76 burn scars in 60 patients were objectively assessed with the Minolta Chromameter CR-300 for erythema and with the Dermascan C for thickness of the scar over a period of 3 months. Each patient was randomly assigned to a "normal" or "lower" compression class treatment, with respectively mean values of 15 and 10 mmHg pressure after wearing the garment for 1 month. ⋯ Positive correlations could be found between erythema and thickness values at all of the three test points while changes in erythema and thickness only correlated significantly after the first month. The pattern of change of both parameters correlated at a high level of significance after 3 months of treatment. These data suggest that pressure garments that deliver a pressure of at least 15 mmHg pressure tend to accelerate scar maturation and that measurements of the pattern of change of the erythema can be used to predict changes in scar thickness and vice versa.

[Silicone occlusive sheeting vs silicone cushion for the treatment of hypertrophic and keloid scars. A prospective-randomized study].
Silicone gel and silicone occlusive sheeting are widely used at present for the treatment of hypertrophic and keloid scars. In recent studies the possibility was raised that static electricity generated by friction activated silicone sheeting could be the reason for this effect, and that it can, with time, cause involution of hypertrophic and keloid scars. Objective of this study was to test this hypothesis and to observe weather a continuous and also an increased negatively charged static electric field will shorten the treatment period. A silicone cushion was developed with the purpose of increasing a negative static-electric charge to accelerate the regression process. ⋯ Treatment with the silicone cushions yielded 74,2% cessation of itching and burning followed by pallor and flattening of the scar, some markedly so, over a few weeks to 5 months period. Additional 25,7% had their scars resolved in up to 8 months of treatment. Four patients (11,4%) who add recalcitrant scars with little response to the use of the silicone cushion were given intralesional corticosteroid injections, in addiction to the use of the cushion, resulting in a fairly rayed resolution of these scars over a period of 2 months. Treatment with the silicone occlusive sheeting yielded 52,3% itching and burning cessation followed by pallor and flattening of the scar, some markedly so, over a few weeks to 5 months period. Additional 22,1% had their scars resolved in up to 8 months of treatment. In conclusion by comparing the results of this trial using silicone cushions for the treatment of hypertrophic and keloid scars with those obtained using silicone gel or occlusive sheeting, a much faster response was demonstrated.
