Comparative Study[Economic evaluation of tramadol/paracetamol in the management of pain in patients with osteoarthritis in Spain].
To compare the costs of treating osteoarthritis (OA) pain using combination tramadol/paracetamol tablets, Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Agents (NSAID) alone or NSAID plus proton pump inhibitors (PPI) from the perspective of the Spanish National Health System. ⋯ Based on the results of a theoretical decision-analytic model, the data obtained may suggest that tramadol/paracetamol is cost saving compared with NSAID + PPI for the treatment of OA pain over a period of 6 months. Tramadol/paracetamol is also cost saving compared with treatment with NSAID alone if considering renal adverse events.

Tropisetron blocks analgesic action of acetaminophen: a human pain model study.
Because the mechanism underlying the analgesic action of acetaminophen remains unclear, we investigated the possible interaction of acetaminophen with central serotonergic pathways. The effects of acetaminophen, tropisetron, the combination of both drugs, and saline on pain perception and central sensitization in healthy volunteers were compared. Sixteen healthy volunteers were included in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study. ⋯ In summary, while the combination of acetaminophen and tropisetron showed no analgesic action, each drug administered alone led to decreased pain ratings as compared to saline. In an electrically evoked human pain model, the combination of acetaminophen with tropisetron was free of any analgesic potential. However, when administered on its own, both acetaminophen and tropisetron were mildly analgesic.

Review Meta Analysis Comparative Study
Single-dose intravenous paracetamol or propacetamol for prevention or treatment of postoperative pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Paracetamol is the most commonly prescribed analgesic for the treatment of acute pain. The efficacy and safety of i.v. formulations of paracetamol is unclear. We performed a systematic search (multiple databases, bibliographies, any language, to May 2010) for single-dose, randomized, controlled clinical trials of propacetamol or i.v. paracetamol for acute postoperative pain in adults or children. ⋯ However, pain on infusion occurred more frequently in those receiving propacetamol compared with placebo (23% vs 1%). A single dose of either propacetamol or i.v. paracetamol provides around 4 h of effective analgesia for about 37% of patients with acute postoperative pain. Both formulations are associated with few AEs, although patients receiving propacetamol have a higher incidence of pain on infusion.

Fever and fever management among intensive care patients with known or suspected infection: a multicentre prospective cohort study.
To describe the duration of fever, fever management, and outcomes among intensive care patients with fever and known or suspected infection. ⋯ We have described the typical time course of fever in an easily identified cohort of patients with known or suspected infection and have determined that these patients have significant morbidity and mortality. This information is vital to the design of interventional studies for the treatment of fever in ICU.
