Use of muscular ultrasound to detect intensive care unit-acquired weakness: a systematic review and Meta-analysis.
Background : This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to detecting performance of muscular ultrasound for intensive care unit (ICU)-acquired weakness (ICUAW). Methods : We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane library, CNKI, VIP, and Wanfang databases for articles published before July 2024. A random-effects model was utilized to derive the summary estimates of sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). ⋯ Furthermore, integrated analysis of these two indicators revealed that the cross-sectional area of rectus femoris was statistically superior to the thickness of rectus femoris, with higher sensitivity (0.82 [95%CI 0.74-0.87] vs. 0.75 [95%CI 0.65-0.83], P < 0.05) and AUC (0.91 [95%CI 0.88-0.93] vs. 0.80 [95%CI 0.76-0.83], P < 0.01). Conclusions : Muscular ultrasound could be a reliable tool for ICUAW detection. Compared with alternative indices, the cross-sectional area of the rectus femoris exhibits superior detection efficacy and may be considered as a valuable parameter for clinical application.

Percutaneous Electrical Stimulation Improves Chronic Knee Pain and Function. A Systematic Review and Meta-analyses.
The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the effectiveness of percutaneous electrical stimulation in the modulation of pain and its implication in the function of patients with a painful knee condition. ⋯ This review showed a positive effect of applying the percutaneous electrical stimulation for reducing pain and improving function in adults with a painful knee.

Primary Embolization of Cerebral Arteriovenous Malformations With Intention to Cure: A Systematic Review of Literature and Meta-Analysis.
The treatment of brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) involves multiple approaches, including embolization, microsurgical resection, and radiosurgery. With the advent of new embolisates, dual-lumen balloon catheters, detachable tip microcatheters, and transvenous embolization, endovascular AVM obliteration has become more effective. Although adjuvant embolization and embolization are commonly used, the safety and effectiveness of curative embolization remain unclear. ⋯ Curative embolization of AVM is primarily reserved for small and low-grade AVMs, with highly variable outcomes. Our findings suggest poor radiographic outcomes and increased risk of complications. Outcomes are highly dependent on patient selection and technique used. Large multicenter prospective studies are required to further guide patient selection, categorize clinical and radiographic outcomes, and identify subgroup of patients that may benefit from curative embolization.

Pedicle Subtraction Osteotomies for Surgical Correction of Fixed Sagittal Imbalance: A Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review.
Disruption of the spine's sagittal balance is associated with significant negative impacts on quality of life. Compared with other spinal osteotomies, pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO), which can potentially offer greater correction, is considered technically challenging and performed at lower rates. The aim of this study was to review the use of PSO to correct fixed sagittal imbalance and assess its efficacy and associated perioperative complications. ⋯ PSO offers significant correction of sagittal vertebral axis, lumbar lordosis, PSO angle, and Oswestry Disability Index scores despite its reduced utilization in recent years. Blood loss and high complication rates must be considered when evaluating the efficacy of this procedure; however, surgeon experience and operative techniques can be used to reduce morbidity.

The COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the need for effective management of severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) using veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO). This meta-analysis aims to compare the effectiveness and outcomes of ECMO in patients with COVID-19 ARDS versus those with non-COVID ARDS, assessing its role in different respiratory virus infections. ⋯ ECMO serves as a vital intervention in severe ARDS, with differential effectiveness observed between COVID-19 and non-COVID patients. The study's findings underline the need for precise patient selection and tailored ECMO application across different viral etiologies. These insights are crucial for enhancing clinical strategies and resource allocation during ongoing and future pandemics.
