Hyperoxia Increases Kidney Injury During Renal Ischemia and Reperfusion in Mice.
Renal ischemia and reperfusion (IR) contribute to perioperative acute kidney injury, and oxygen is a key regulator of this process. We hypothesized that oxygen administration during surgery and renal IR would impact postoperative kidney function and injury in mice. ⋯ In this controlled preclinical study of oxygen treatment during renal IR surgery, hyperoxia and hypoxia impaired renal function, increased renal injury, and impacted expression of genes that affect mitochondrial biogenesis and antioxidant response. These results might have implications for patients during surgery when high concentrations of oxygen are frequently administered, especially in cases involving renal IR.

Although patient-risk stratification is important for selecting individualized treatment for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), predicting the oncologic outcomes after surgery remains a challenge. In this study, we identified a nectin family gene panel (NFGP) that can accurately stratify oncologic outcomes in patients with PDAC. ⋯ This study established the predictive significance of NFGP for oncologic outcomes after surgery in PDAC. Our data demonstrate its clinical impact as a potent biomarker for optimal patient selection for individualized treatment strategies.

Assess quality of life and mental health implications of mastectomy for breast cancer on sub-Saharan African women. ⋯ Women from Ghana and Ethiopia who underwent mastectomy experienced a decline in breast-related body image while also experiencing decreased levels of depression and anxiety.

Migraine is a disabling disorder characterized by recurrent headaches, accompanied by abnormal sensory sensitivity and anxiety. Despite extensive historical use of cannabis in headache disorders, there is limited research on the nonpsychoactive cannabidiol (CBD) for migraine and there is no scientific evidence to prove that CBD is an effective treatment. The effects of CBD are examined here using a calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-induced migraine model that provides measures of cephalic allodynia, spontaneous pain, altered light sensitivity (photophobia), and anxiety-like behavior in C57BL/6J mice. ⋯ Finally, CBD blocked CGRP-induced anxiety in male mice, but failed in providing protection from CGRP-induced photophobia in females. These results demonstrate the efficacy of CBD in preventing episodic and chronic migraine-like states with reduced risk of causing medication overuse headache. Cannabidiol also shows potential as an abortive agent for treating migraine attacks and headache-related conditions such as spontaneous pain and anxiety.

Vagueness in Goals-of-Care Conferences for Critically Ill Patients: Types of Hedge Language Used by Physicians.
Hedge language is a category of language that refers to words or phrases that make statements "fuzzier." We sought to understand how physicians use hedge language during goals-of-care conferences in the ICU. ⋯ Hedge language is ubiquitous in physician-surrogate communication during goals-of-care conferences in the ICU and can be used to introduce vagueness to statements in ways beyond expressing uncertainty. It is not known how hedge language impacts decision-making or clinician-surrogate interactions. This study prioritizes specific types of hedge language for future research based on their frequency and novelty.
