There are numerous, well-established racial disparities in the management of pain. The degree to which these are evident at the stage of conducting clinical trials is unknown. To address this knowledge gap, we examined race-based reporting, participation of Black individuals, and the factors associated with reporting and participation in pain clinical trials in the United States. ⋯ Our results indicate that representation of Black participants in pain clinical trials generally aligns with national demographics in the United States. Increased representation corresponds with health conditions more prevalent among Black individuals (eg, cardiovascular disease) and with a diverse study team composition. Despite these encouraging results, less than half of pain trials reported race, which introduces potential publication bias and limits external validity.

Skill Translation Following the Vital Anesthesia Simulation Training Facilitator Course: A Qualitative Study.
Simulation-based education (SBE) is common in resource-rich locations, but barriers exist to widespread implementation in low-resource settings (LRSs). Vital Anesthesia Simulation Training (VAST) was developed to offer low-cost, immersive simulation to teach core clinical practices and nontechnical skills to perioperative health care teams. To promote sustainability, courses in new locations are preceded by the VAST Facilitator Course (VAST FC) to train local faculty. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of VAST FC graduates in translating postcourse knowledge and skills into their workplaces. ⋯ Participants found parallels between SBE debriefing conversations, clinical event debriefing, and feedback conversations and were able to apply knowledge and skills in a variety of settings post course. This study supports the relevance of simulation facilitator training for SBE in LRSs.

The Guidelines Task Force conducted a systematic review of the relevant literature on occipital nerve stimulation (ONS) for occipital neuralgia (ON) to update the original 2015 guidelines to ensure timeliness and accuracy for clinical practice. ⋯ Based on the availability of new literature, the current article is a minor update only that does not result in modification of the prior recommendations: Clinicians may use ONS as a treatment option for patients with medically refractory ON.

We determined whether intraoperative packed red blood cell (PRBC) transfusion was associated with a higher incidence of hospital-acquired venous thromboembolic (HA-VTE) complications and adverse outcomes after isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. ⋯ Intraoperative PRBC transfusion was associated with HA-VTE and adverse outcomes after isolated CABG surgery.

Co-occurring chronic pain and mental health issues are prevalent in adolescents, costly to society and can lead to increased risk of complications throughout the lifespan. While research has largely examined paediatric chronic pain and mental health in isolation, little is known about the unique challenges faced by adolescents who experience these co-occurring symptoms. This idiographic study examined the lived experience of adolescents with co-occurring chronic pain and mental health symptoms to identify salient issues for this population. ⋯ Adolescents with co-occurring chronic pain and mental health symptoms describe the experience as if there was a storm inside of them disrupting their sense of physical, emotional and social wellbeing. This inner chaos interferes with their self-identity and relationships with others. Challenges articulating their experiences, and negative encounters associated with their symptoms, further impact feelings of isolation and difficulties accessing support.
