Although the overall psychosocial benefits and body image gains of postmastectomy breast reconstruction are well-established, there is limited information on how postoperative complications affect patient quality of life (QOL). ⋯ Our study demonstrates that QOL and well-being are not negatively impacted by postoperative complications. Although patients who had no complications had an overall more positive experience, nearly two-thirds of all patients, no matter the degree of complication, stated that their overall experience either met or exceeded their expectations.

Purpose: To evaluate significant risk variables for sepsis incidence and develop a predictive model for rapid screening and diagnosis of sepsis in patients from the emergency department (ED). Methods: Sepsis-related risk variables were screened based on the PIRO (Predisposition, Insult, Response, Organ dysfunction) system. Training (n = 1,272) and external validation (n = 568) datasets were collected from Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) and Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital (BTCH), respectively. ⋯ Both calibration curves of EASE in training and external validation datasets were close to the ideal model and were well-calibrated. Conclusions: The EASE model can predict and screen ED-admitted patients with sepsis. It demonstrated superior diagnostic performance and clinical application promise by external validation and in-parallel comparison with the NEWS scoring system.

Pulmonary artery catheters provide important information about cardiac function, mixed venous oxygenation, and right-sided pressures and potentially provide temporary pacing ability. ⋯ The overall risk of serious complications with right heart catheter placement and manipulation is low and often outweighed by its benefits, specifically pressure monitoring and pacing.

The primary objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to elucidate the rate of venous thromboembolism (VTE) after endovenous interventions for varicose veins in the presence of pharmacological and mechanical thromboprophylaxis versus mechanical thromboprophylaxis alone. ⋯ There is a significant reduction in the rate of DVT with additional pharmacological thromboprophylaxis and routine prescription of anticoagulation after endovenous varicose vein intervention should be considered. VTE risk for individual study participants is heterogeneous and risk stratification in future randomized interventional studies is critical to establish the clinical effectiveness and safety of additional pharmacological thromboprophylaxis.

Real-Time Augmented Reality Annotation for Surgical Education During Laparoscopic Surgery: Results from a Single-Center Randomized Controlled Trial and Future Aspects.
We developed an interactive augmented reality tool (HoloPointer) that enables real-time annotation on a laparoscopy monitor for intraoperative guidance. This application operates exclusively via verbal commands and head movements to ensure a sterile workflow. ⋯ The majority of trainees improved their surgical performance using the HoloPointer in elective laparoscopic cholecystectomies, and the rate of classic but potentially misleading corrections was noticeably reduced. The HoloPointer has the potential to improve education in minimally invasive surgery.
