The Impact of Severe Anastomotic Leak on Long-term Survival and Cancer Recurrence After Surgical Resection for Esophageal Malignancy.
The aim of this study was to the determine impact of severe esophageal anastomotic leak (SEAL) upon long-term survival and locoregional cancer recurrence. ⋯ This large multicenter study provides strong evidence that SEAL adversely impacts cancer prognosis. The mechanism through which SEAL increases local recurrence is an important area for future research.

Cosmesis and Body Image in Patients Undergoing Single-port Versus Conventional Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: A Multicenter Double-blinded Randomized Controlled Trial (SPOCC-trial).
To evaluate cosmesis, body image, pain, and quality of life (QoL) after single-port laparoscopic cholecystectomy (SPLC) versus conventional 4-port laparoscopic cholecystectomy (4PLC). ⋯ This is the first multicenter double-blinded RCT reporting superior short- and long-term cosmetic and body image, postoperative pain, and QoL in SPLC compared with 4PLC. Although cost-effectiveness is still a subject of ongoing debate, SPLC should be offered to patients undergoing surgery for benign gallbladder disease.

Comparison of outcomes after laparoscopy-assisted and open total gastrectomy for early gastric cancer.
The aim of this study was to compare the results of laparoscopy-assisted total gastrectomy with those of open total gastrectomy for early gastric cancer. ⋯ Laparoscopy-assisted total gastrectomy for early gastric cancer is feasible in terms of long-term results, including survival and recurrence. However, a higher postoperative mortality rate and an increased risk of anastomotic leakage after laparoscopic-assisted total gastrectomy are of concern.

Epidemiology of Stroke in Pediatric Cardiac Surgical Patients Supported With Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation.
Stroke is a common complication of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and pediatric cardiac surgical patients may be at higher risk. Epidemiology and risk factors for stroke in these patients are not well characterized. ⋯ This multicenter analysis demonstrates that pediatric cardiac surgical patients on ECMO are at high risk of stroke; younger or underweight patients and those with longer ECMO duration are at greatest risk, independent of procedural complexity. Future study is necessary to determine how anticoagulation or other clinical practices can be modified to reduce stroke incidence.

Early and Long-term Oncological Outcomes After Laparoscopic Resection for Colorectal Liver Metastases: A Propensity Score-based Analysis.
To compare early and long-term outcomes in patients undergoing resection for colorectal liver metastases (CLM) by either a laparoscopic (LA) or an open (OA) approach. ⋯ In the patients who are suitable for LA, laparoscopy yields better operative outcomes without impairing long-term survival.
