Propensity score analysis of outcomes following laparoscopic or open liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma.
Liver resection is a potentially curative approach for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Laparoscopic liver resections may reduce complication rates, especially in patients with cirrhosis. The aim of this study was to compare the results of laparoscopic liver resection with those of open liver resection for HCC. ⋯ In comparison with the open approach, laparoscopic minor liver resections for HCC improved short-term outcomes, with similar survival results.

Mesh fixation is used to prevent recurrence at the potential risk for chronic pain in TEP. The aim was to compare the impact of permanent fixation (PF) with no fixation (NF)/nonpermanent fixation (NPF) of mesh on chronic pain after TEP repair for primary inguinal hernia. ⋯ The TEP procedure for primary inguinal hernia repair in men is associated with a low frequency of chronic pain and recurrent operations, with no difference between permanent fixation and no/nonpermanent fixation of mesh in a nationwide population-based study. TEP without fixation reduces costs and is safe for all patients.

The development of colorectal cancer is influenced by hormonal factors. Oophorectomy alters endogenous levels of sex hormones, but the effect on colorectal cancer risk is unclear. The aim of this cohort study was to examine colorectal cancer risk after oophorectomy for benign indications. ⋯ Colorectal cancer risk is increased after oophorectomy for benign indications.

To determine the long-term degree of compliance with the Surviving Sepsis Campaign (SSC) bundles and related outcomes after an educational program in septic patients admitted to a network of intensive care units (ICU). ⋯ Our study confirmed that an educational campaign aimed at early recognition and management of patients with severe sepsis improves compliance with management recommendations and hospital survival in the long term.

Thyroid cancer patients frequently have favorable outcomes. However, a small subset develops aggressive disease refractory to traditional treatments. Therefore, we sought to characterize oncogenic mutations in thyroid cancers to identify novel therapeutic targets that may benefit patients with advanced, refractory disease. ⋯ This analysis revealed that several previously unreported oncogenic gene mutations exist in thyroid cancers and may be targets for the development of future therapies. Further investigation into the role of these genes is warranted.
