Randomized Controlled Trial
Comparison of three different ketofol proportions in children undergoing dental treatment.
Sedation is gaining popularity among dental procedures in children. Ketamine and propofol mixture, known as ketofol, is one of the promising choices in sedation protocols; however, there is no consensus on the exact ratio of ketamine plus propofol especially in dental practice. The aim of present study was to compare perioperative side effect profiles, recovery profiles, and satisfaction rates of both parents' and dentists' following three different ratio of ketofol mixtures in children undergoing dental treatment. Materials and. ⋯ Decreased ketamine doses in ketofol mixture was related with decreased side effect profile, high parents' satisfaction with fast recovery, however, dentists' satisfaction was lower. In this context, results of present study indicated that ketofol mixture of 1:2 ratio was more reliable choice than others when all investigated parameters evaluated simultaneously.

Group 2 ITI Consensus Report: Prosthodontics and implant dentistry.
Working Group 2 was convened to address topics relevant to prosthodontics and dental implants. Systematic reviews were developed according to focused questions addressing (a) the number of implants required to support fixed full-arch restorations, (b) the influence of intentionally tilted implants compared to axial positioned implants when supporting fixed dental prostheses (FDPs), (c) implant placement and loading protocols, (d) zirconia dental implants, (e) zirconia and metal ceramic implant supported single crowns and (f) zirconia and metal ceramic implant supported FDPs. ⋯ The literature supports the use of various implant numbers to support full-arch fixed prostheses. The use of intentionally tilted dental implants is indicated when appropriate conditions exist. Implant placement and loading protocols should be considered together when planning and treating patients. One-piece zirconia dental implants can be recommended when appropriate clinical conditions exist although two-piece zirconia implants should be used with caution as a result of insufficient data. Clinical performance of zirconia and metal ceramic single implant supported crowns is similar and each demonstrates significant, though different, complications. Zirconia ceramic FDPs are less reliable than metal ceramic. Implant supported monolithic zirconia prostheses may be a future option with more supporting evidence.

The aim of this study was to evaluate dental students' retention of factual and procedural knowledge gained in a preclinical course in operative dentistry during a clinical dental curriculum. In 2017, all 157 seventh- to tenth-semester dental students at a dental school in Germany were asked to repeat the same written examination performed at the end of the preclinical course in the sixth semester. The examinations consisted of 30 multiple-choice questions covering factual and procedural knowledge. ⋯ All the students underestimated their performance on the re-examination. Students mostly rated their knowledge level significantly higher on the original examination than on the re-examination. Overall, this study found that factual and procedural knowledge gained in a preclinical course in operative dentistry was not increased during the clinical dental curriculum.

Patients with any type of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) may have several symptoms in their temporomandibular joints, masticatory muscles and associated structures, and may have otological symptoms such as tinnitus, ear fullness, ear pain, hearing loss, hyperacusis, and vertigo, which may be due to the anatomical proximity between the temporomandibular joint, muscles innervated by the trigeminal nerve, and ear structures. Objective: This study found a prevalence of ear complaints described in the medical records of patients (n = 485) at the Center for Diagnosis and Treatment of the Temporomandibular Joint and Dental-Facial Functional Alterations at Tuiuti University of Paraná (CDATM/UTP), with TMD evaluated by the Research Diagnostic Criteria/Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/ TMD). ⋯ These data support the correlation between temporomandibular disorders and otological symptoms, even without being caused directly by the ear.

Preclinical dental training is essential for the development of psychomotor skills necessary for clinical practice. The study aimed to investigate the impact of teaching with a layered base plate blocks on cavity preparations and students' self-perceived confidence, readiness, and ability. ⋯ This study explores the methods of enhancing motor skills taught in preclinical operative dentistry courses, especially in short academic programs.
